"Why on earth would 168 leading republicans in the RNC pick “the most moderate candidate” after such a huge defeat of the centrist, moderate McCainiac’s Disease in 2008?" http://conservativeamerican.org/conservatives/does-this-sound-conservative/

I’m a gun owner, and most of my friends are gun owners, and none of us like his views on semi-auto weapons.

He told the Post that he’d ban them, letting us keep only “shotguns used for skeet shooting” as “there’s no need for assault weapons.”

That ain’t conservative...

“Anybody thinks I’m a troll can kiss my white ass”

If nothing else, Steele has upset the racists.

Isn’t that what Mike Moran’s brother said when flight 800 crashed off Long Island?

Should people have access to buy assault weapons?

Michael Steele's answer to the Washington Post:

"Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you're going hunting? That's overkill."

A ‘my way or the hiway’ attitude seeking 100% philosophical purity will be the deathknell of conservatism on the American political landscape.

Yup, how many public pro-life candidates have the Dems fielded recently?

Get real -- Dems win because of voter fraud, welfare-dependents, union thugs and reflexive Dems whose parents regarded FDR as a saint.

Cheers!

Who did you want to be the RNC chairman?

How about Jim Robinson? (wipes Hershey bar off of nose.)

I think the election of Michale Steele advances moderation in the GOP.

Bump. Just more "big tent", all inclusive horse-crap that does nothing more than dilute the conservative cause and blur distinctions.

And...I just read Christie Whitman’s site, and she said this about Steele:

“Christine Todd Whitman is the President of The Whitman Strategy Group (WSG),...She is also co-chair of the Republican Leadership Council (RLC), which she founded with Senator John Danforth and Lt. Gov. Michael Steele.”

John Danforth was an ultra-liberal Rockefeller Republican!

“The RLC’s mission is to support fiscally conservative, socially tolerant candidates and to reclaim the word Republican. The RLC was created in March of 2007 by joining forces with Governor Whitman’s political action committee, It’s My Party Too.”

Wow...it’s becoming evident that Steele is a big-tent Republican who’s trying to pull the wool over conservatives’ eyes! He thinks Roe v Wade should be kept, wants to ban semi-auto weapons and co-founded a group (with ultra-lib John Danforth) to “reclaim” the Republican Party, merging it with Todd Whitman’s liberal group It’s My Party Too.

Yuck...he’s lost my support.

The WSJ, or a particular columnist for the WSJ? The run a lot of columnists with a lot of different opinions.

All I know is that the man is pro-life, and most RINOs are not.

Fortunately the Heller decision answered that question. The two rights contained in the Second Amendment, according to the Supreme Court is the right to life, and defense of that life and the right to own militia weapons. Specifically guns like the Army's AR-15 and the pistols used by the Army.

Plenty of Governments try to limit the firepower of their citizens, Heller made clear that the Second Amendment prohibited that.

The next step with Heller is incorporation, make it applicable to the states.

It would be interesting to see WHO within the WSJ wrote that quote within the quote. Remember, Al Hunt ? The WSJ’s Washington Bureau Chief forever who is married to Judy Woodruff?

If I see a WSJ editorial, or an IBD editorial condemning the Steele pick, I will rethink my support of him. I expect to see no such editorial.

His membership in Whitman’s group he only left last summer to get in line for this run?

You don't mean the same Whitman who destroyed any chances of a 1996 GOP POTUS win do you? That Whitman? If so I'm gonna be sick.

Blackwell was my first pick, then probably Dawson...after that nobody else running.

I would prefer a doctrinaire social conservative who is telegenic.

that some of you guys and gals prefer a more moderate tack to the party is just something we will all have to settle coming down the pike.

this schism is not new to the GOP

btw....JV already knows this but Carolyn if you think I’m a hard core righty you musta missed the old days here when guys like me were lambasted as NeoCons though I’m not

my creed is basically that social conservatism is first and political correctness is kryptonite

Yes it is and ignore is a wonderful tool. Not much fun for them to post when not a single person responds.

actually one could do worse

JR has never flinched from a pro-life pro second amendment social conservatism though many here obviously have

if these Steele threads are any indication, FR is at ebbtide conservatism wise

that will pass though
