So you bought a new rifle, now what are you going to do?

Gun sellers have been buzzing with activity lately as people have been stocking up in anticipation of what our new president might try to do to their right to own guns. One wag even named Obama Gun salesman of the year. (Dang, I wish I had thought of that.)

Mr. Obama generated a great deal of anxiety as he tried to convince gun owners to believe what he said not what he did.

Anyway, there were a lot of new guns under the Christmas tree last year. And if you got a new rifle, or even if you've had one a while, there's a program touring the country that looks interesting. It's the Appleseed Project, and here's what their website says:

The Appleseed Program is designed to take you from being a simple rifle owner to being a true rifleman. All throughout American history, the rifleman has been defined as a marksman capable of hitting a man-sized target from 500 yards away — no ifs, ands or buts about it. This 500-yard range is traditionally known as "the rifleman's quarter-mile;" a rifleman can hit just about any target he can see. This skill was particularly evident in the birth of our country, and was the difference in winning the Revolutionary War.

The program is coming to West Texas, and the first one is in just a few weeks. Here's a link to the PDF Flier for the event on February 21-22, 2009, at the Midland Shooters Association rifle range. And here's the price list. (Women, military and kids free!) More detailed information can be found here.

Actually, there are things going on at the range almost every weekend. For example, the learned and likable John Krenik puts on a High Power Rifle Match on the first Saturday of each month. Check out the photos. Many of the participants use AR-15s, and it's a great way to practice and compete with friends.

So unwrap that new gun or clean up the old one and head for the range. Don't be like me and let your shooting skills depreciate. You have to practice to get good, and you have to practice to stay good.

I just went to a shooting range today! I only shot a 9mm pistol though. There was a one hour wait.

The gun business is booming these days.

Sure it is a good idea, and I am sure they are pretty busy.

Midland is hours away, and I can shoot here any day I like. And have friends who are “Good!” marksman.

I was brought up around it, my father was an armorer when he was in Europe. He maintained 50 caliber machine guns (bofers) and the like.

HR45 will meet Stiff resistance here.

I have noticed that activity at local ranges has increased in the last few months. Note to the Dems: there are more than just bunch of “bitter clinging white guys” at the range.

So you bought a new rifle, now what are you going to do?

The very first thing you should do, number one on your to-do list, is join the NRA. Think of your membership dues as an insurance policy protecting your new rifle against Obama's grubby, grabby, little fingers.

When Slick Willie was in office the mocking sound of contempt was “Yee Haw Soo-Wee”

This time it may be “Lock-n-load” as you stated.

Very appropriate. Will be interesting to see if HR45 is truly brought to the floor. If it is, things might really heat up fast.

Best regards,

>> The gun business is booming these days.

Well, the gun business will be down the tubes in a few years if us old geezers don’t talk some of the newbies into joining a pro-gun organization. HINT: If you are an NRA member, you can become an NRA recruiter, sign ‘em up, and give the newbies a discount in the process. Wake up people. Push away from the keyboard and do something. Now.

Hitting man sized targets at moderately long ranges is not that difficult. Our gun club had a thousand yard range and hitting a metal gong at 300yds.

I noticed my Nephew who is not a particularly good shot could hit it regularly using an old but accurate 1909 Argentine Mauser. The fact that the sights were dead on at that range probably made a difference.

Now a thousand yards is an entirely different thing mainly because of the difficulty in judging hold over. The sights had a thousand meter slot but it was not quite on.

same here. weekday mornings are getting heavy and weekday nights also, as the classes are really picking up new people. there are quite a few of us regular members who shoot an hour and half to two hours each trip in and I heard rumor that they were going to go to a one hour maximum, each shooter because of the demand for lanes. if it does go that way that is not a bad thing at all really as we get a LOT of new shooters starting taking it up.

'scuse me, but NOBODY was shooting .50cal muskets 500yds in 1776.

Nobody.

They'd barely shoot that far if you pointed them up at a 45deg angle.

Still the point's not lost. Each and EVERY one of us should be able to hit a water mellon at 500yds, every time.

Look for the resonance of your barrel...try different bullet weights. Use a bullet with a good ballistic co-efficiency (at least .400). You should be able to shoot 5 shots into a 1 inch group at 100 yds.

Even Ruger and Savage rifles will do that if you find their resonance.

Please expand on “resonance”. I’ve never heard of it and want to know more.

Absolutely. I became a Lifetime member last year. Everyone should join. It's the best protection against anti-gun legislation.

Back in 1976 I was lucky enough to buy a 1909 Argentine in like new condition. It’s one of the most accurate military issue rifles I’ve ever shot. The absolute best military rifle I’ve shot is a 1986 Swedish mauser sniper with a receiver date of 1900.That old gun wil give my Remington 700 heavy barrel .306 a run for it’s money.

Dad and I took my new Sig Sauer 556 out to the indoor range to play this past weekend. Using the stock, non-telescopic holosight, my father was putting down TWENTY round 1” shot groups at max range (75 feet for this particular range). I was doing the same, although I had 3 outliers.

Sweet rifle. Incredibly accurate.

Wonder who the next one will be.
