CHICAGO: CRIME KIND OF TOWN

Crime in Chicago has been in the news lately, but it is nothing new. Historically it dates back over a hundred years. From the tale of the Gray Wolves

http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/540.html

The 1890s Chicago City Council was notorious for corrupt political practices orchestrated by a faction of its aldermen known as the Gray Wolves. So named because they were viewed as preying upon the defenseless public, the Gray Wolves were led by First Ward aldermen “Bathhouse” John Coughlin and “Hinky Dink” Mike Kenna, and Johnny Powers of the Nineteenth Ward. These elected officials were not only skilled at trading votes for favors, but once in office they excelled in making municipal decisions to profit themselves financially.

TO the present, it is a compelling historical subject.

Obama And That Other Ponzi Scheme: president-elect’s name may emerge in Norman Hsu fraud trial

From:
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/1231082hsu1.html

As if being linked to one high-profile criminal case weren’t enough, President-elect Barack Obama’s name may soon pop up in another federal prosecution, this one involving a massive Ponzi scheme .... Obama could figure in the upcoming fraud trial of Norman Hsu, the disgraced Democratic fundraiser who was charged last year with operating a $60 million pyramid scheme...

...including perhaps the president-elect—will be introduced at trial.” Before becoming a key fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, Hsu co-hosted a 2005 California fundraiser for Obama’s political action committee and introduced the Illinois Democrat to Marc Gorenberg, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who later joined the Obama campaign’s national finance committee. Prosecutors allege that Hsu directed his investors to donate money to specific candidates, and then reimbursed them in violation of federal campaign laws. ....

According to the Cook County Assessor’s website, the Chicago home of four-term Democrat Congressman and likely new White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, doesn’t exist...there seems to be no public record of Emanuel ever paying property taxes on this home.
on 11/07/2008 This post removed due to Cook County Government Intimidation

According to the Cook County Assessor’s website, the Chicago home of four-term Democrat Congressman and likely new White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, doesn’t exist. While the address of 4228 North Hermitage is listed as Emanuel’s residence on the Illinois State Board of Elections’ website, there seems to be no public record of Emanuel ever paying property taxes on this home.

The Cook County Assessor’s and Cook County Treasurer’s online records indicate Emanuel’s Chicago neighbors pay between $3,500 and $7,000 annually. However, Illinois Review has been unable to locate any evidence that the former Clinton advisor and investment banker is paying his fair share of Cook County’s notoriously high tax burden.

Why wouldn’t 4228 North Hermitage property owners Rahm Emanuel and wife Amy Rule pay property taxes?

One reason may be because Emanuel and Rule declared their 4228 North Hermitage home as the office location for their personal non-profit foundation called the “Rahm Emanuel and Amy Rule Charitable Foundation”. As the non-profit’s headquarters, their home could be exempt from paying property taxes.

In January 2007, USA Today reported on Emanuel’s foundation:

The Rahm Emanuel and Amy Rule Charitable Trust was formed in 2002, when the Chicago lawmaker was first elected. The former Clinton White House aide and his wife, Amy Rule, are its only donors. Emanuel was an investment banker after serving in the White House.

The trust reported having $2,900 on hand at the end of 2005 after receiving $34,000 from Emanuel and donating more than $31,000.

During the past three years, Emanuel’s charity gave nearly $25,000 to the Anshe Emet synagogue and school [a private school that the Rahm/Rule children attend]..., and $15,000 to the foundation run by former president Bill Clinton. It also gave $14,000 to Marwen, a Chicago charity that provides art classes and other educational help to low-income children. Rule is on Marwen’s board.

Emanuel’s 4228 North Hermitage home is one of the largest in the neighborhood, with a side yard that appears to be a vacant lot, making the Emanuels’ property the largest portion on the block.

Other North Hermitage homes on Emanuel’s block are valued in the $500,000 plus range. According to Cook County Treasurer’s website, the Chicago owners of nearby 118 year old 4222 North Hermitage pay almost $6800 annually. The family at 4224 North Heritage pays $6000 each year in property taxes.

President Elect Obama - himself a connected, Chicago insider who has benefited from questionable land deals - may find it difficult to explain why his very own Chicago-based chief of staff doesn’t pay property taxes like the “little guy” he claims to represent. Or perhaps allowing his wealthy friends to avoid taxes is part of Obama’s trickle down redistribution economics. It’s certainly the kind of “change” we Illinoisans can believe in...since we’re quite familiar with it here in the federal indictment land of Daley, Blagojevich, Madigan, Jones, Cellini, Rezko, etc., etc.

‘Thousands of phone calls’ on feds’ wiretaps
MORE TARGETS | ‘Multiple witnesses have come forward,’ authorities say

From:
http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/blagojevich/1358086,CST-NWS-blago01.article
.......
The filing also revealed that the government has additional targets in its ongoing probe and that the governor’s Dec. 9 arrest spurred more witnesses to talk to prosecutors. “Multiple witnesses have come forward in recent weeks to discuss their knowledge of criminal activity,” the filing states.

Thousands of phone calls were captured between October and December, but just four of them will be the subject of a hearing Monday in federal court.

........

The FBI tapped Blagojevich’s home phone and the cell phone of his onetime top aide Lon Monk, and two bugs were planted in the governor’s campaign office.

The probable cause basis for the listening devices came from information provided by John Wyma, a former Blagojevich insider who has met with authorities, according to the criminal complaint

More on Joh Wyma...
If the feds have Wyma, who needs Rezko?

FROM:
http://www.southtownstar.com/news/miller/1320476,120908miller.article
......
The Tribune cited unidentified sources to claim that bigtime lobbyist John Wyma’s cooperation allowed federal investigators to make “covert tape recordings” of Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

You just can’t get more “inside” than Wyma.
.....
Wyma has been known to hang out at Blagojevich’s house for hours, playing chess and swapping stories. Rezko was never Wyma-style close to Blagojevich.

Chris Kelly was a much closer Blagojevich friend than Wyma, and Kelly and Wyma reportedly were at odds throughout the years about who really had the governor’s ear. But it was Wyma who truly put all the pieces together with the fundraising and the lobbying.

Rezko is in prison, Kelly is awaiting trial on a tax beef, and now Wyma apparently is cooperating with the G.

But there was always one call Blagojevich regularly took, his aides say, and that was from Rahm Emanuel, his congressman, his one-time campaign adviser, and more recently - and troubling for Emanuel - one of his contacts with President-elect Barack Obama’s transition staff.

The rapport Blagojevich and Emanuel shared over the years has suddenly become a troubling liability for Emanuel and the new president he will serve as chief of staff.

Emanuel and Obama have remained silent about what, if anything, Emanuel knew of the governor’s alleged efforts to peddle Obama’s vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder.

Emanuel did contact the governor’s office about the appointment and left Blagojevich with the impression that he was pushing Valerie Jarrett, a close Obama friend, so he wouldn’t have to compete with her in the White House for Obama’s attention, said a person close to Blagojevich. The person requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to talk about the governor’s discussions regarding the vacancy.

It was not clear whether Blagojevich inferred Emanuel’s motive for advocating Jarrett, or whether Emanuel discussed the appointment with Blagojevich directly or with John Harris, the governor’s then-chief of staff, who also is charged in the case, according to the source.

Emanuel’s refusal to discuss the matter publicly, and the few comments offered by Obama to date, have prompted questions about Emanuel’s ties to Blagojevich and what fallout he will face as the criminal case unfolds, although sources have said he is not a target of prosecutors. Even so, any hint of scandal for Emanuel threatens to tarnish Obama’s promise of new political leadership free of scandal and corruption.

Obama has said he will release a full accounting of his transition staff’s interaction with Blagojevich and his aides over his Senate replacement once he receives the OK from prosecutors sometime this week. Until then, Obama has said it would be inappropriate for him or his aides to comment further.

Prosecutors refer in the 76-page complaint to the governor’s discussions on FBI tapes about a “president-elect adviser,” believed to be Emanuel, but they do not specifically cite contacts with Emanuel or anyone on Obama’s transition staff.

Instead, the taped conversations reveal Blagojevich telling others to float his idea by the president’s adviser of forming a nonprofit that he hoped would, with Obama’s help, receive millions of dollars that the governor could tap later.

Blagojevich said he didn’t want the idea associated directly in conversations about the Senate appointment or filling Emanuel’s House seat, according to the complaint. However, Blagojevich is quoted as saying “I want it to be in his head” for later discussions about Emanuel’s successor.

It was Blagojevich who, seemingly out of nowhere, yanked Emanuel into his scandal when answering reporters’ questions the day before his Dec. 9 arrest, invoking his name in an apparent attempt to shrug off any perception of wrongdoing.

He said he wasn’t concerned about a report in the Chicago Tribune that confidant and former aide John Wyma’s cooperation had helped lead federal prosecutors to tape the governor’s conversations.

Blagojevich said he’s “always lawful” whenever he speaks, and he was confident Wyma has been “an honest person who’s conducted himself in an honest way. That’s the John Wyma I know and it’s the John Wyma that Rahm Emanuel knows and a lot of other people know.”

Blagojevich is right. Wyma does have ties to both him and Emanuel, those close to both have said. And Wyma’s clients contributed to both - more than $100,000 to Emanuel’s campaigns and causes, and more than $445,000 to Blagojevich’s, according to campaign finance records reviewed by The Associated Press.

Philippe Reines
Carousel Center in Syracuse.

WASHINGTON: A developer in New York state donated $100,000 to former President Bill Clinton’s foundation in November 2004, around the same time that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton helped secure millions of dollars in federal assistance for the businessman’s mall project.

Hillary Clinton helped enact legislation allowing the developer, Robert Congel, to use tax-exempt bonds to help finance the construction of the Destiny USA entertainment and shopping complex, an expansion of the Carousel Center in Syracuse.

She also helped secure a provision in a highway bill that set aside $5 million for Destiny USA roadway construction.

The bill with the tax-free bonds provision became law in October 2004, weeks before the donation, and the highway bill with the set-aside became law in August 2005, about nine months after the donation.

Congel and Philippe Reines, a spokesman for Hillary Clinton, both said there was no connection between his donation and her legislative work on his project’s behalf. Reines said the senator had supported the expansion of Carousel mall “purely as part of her unwavering commitment to improving upstate New York’s struggling economy, and nothing more.”

This is going to sound strange, Maxine Box says, but 50 years later, she can’t forget it: Barack Obama’s mother used to crack her knuckles...

Obama File 38 Barack Obama, Frank Marshall Davis, Vernon Jarrett-One Degree of Seperation
Obama File 37 here
Why did Barack Obama move to Chicago? Why did he choose a city famous for its corruption and distrust of outsiders as a launching pad for his political career?

Did Obama’s boyhood mentor, life long communist Frank Marshall Davis influence that choice?

Obama admits he was inspired to first move to Chicago in 1983 by the election of the city’s first black mayor Harold washington. Obama even unsuccessfully wrote away for a job in Washington’s administration.

Frank Marshall Davis had lived in Chicago for many years until moving to Hawaii in 1948. He had been active in Chicago’s post War Communist Party while Harold Washington was a left leaning young law student. Had the two ever met?

Possibly not, but there was only one degree of seperation.

Frank Marshall Davis was involved in Chicago’s South Side Community Art Center “a meeting place for young African American writers and artists during the 1940s”. An outgrowth of the Federal Art Project, the Art Center was a hangout for Communist Party members and sympathisers including Richard Wright, Margaret Burroughs, Marion Perkins and Arna Bontemps.

Another center regular was a young journalist named Vernon Jarrett. (((Valerie Jarrett’s father)))

Davis and Jarrett also worked together on the black run newspaper, the Chicago Defender.
