Former Georgia Senator Max Cleland, who lost an arm and two legs while serving the nation in Vietnam, is being considered by President-elect Obama for the post of Secretary of Veterans Affairs according to reports from NBC News and the Associated Press [Sources: MSNBC.com, "The Obama cabinet speculation list", November 26, 2008; Associated Press, "Obama weighs names for top posts", November 26, 2008].
In 1977, President Carter named Cleland as the head of the Veterans Administration making him the youngest person and first Vietnam vet to hold the job. After President Carter lost his re-election bid in 1980, Cleland left the V.A. post and returned home to Georgia where he served fourteen years as Secretary of State before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996.
The New York Times published a profile of Max Cleland in its Thursday paper writing that Cleland would bring "a strong military background as a former Army captain and federal experience in veterans affairs" to the job if nominated by Obama to be Secretary of the V.A. [Source: New York Times, "The New Team - Max Cleland", November 27, 2008]
A more inappropriate or less respectable choice would have been difficult to make.
The Obamanation is really shaping up to be a three ring circus of fools and scalawags.
Yep, the guy who blew his limbs off picking up what he thought was a dud grenade, I believe.
Max Cleland has parlayed a careless act of nearly killing himself and others into a lifetime political career — with little else to recommend him other than him being supremely careless with his own grenades....
So much for change in OhCrap Inc’s new and improved version of Hope !
OMG... just when I thought it could not get an worse.
Biden will end up putting his foot in his own ass again.
Lets give Max a hand. Stand up Max. Oh Good God.........
There , fixed it.
Oh, grief. I don’t call him Marx Cleland for nothing. This goober would always roll himself out in front of cameras for the sympathy vote. Finally, we as Georgians, stood up and said NO. The jerk thinks it was some kind of insult! We just didn’t like his communist views, his anti-American and Georgian voting habits, and his cuddling up with Bill Clinton!
I retired from the VA this past January after 30 years there plus 3 years in the Army. When Max Cleland headed the VA it went from bad to worse. He did nothing but make a public spectical of himself at every opportunity. Of course he was outdone by Clinton’s appointee, Togo West, or Zulu East as we used to call him, a paranoid of the first order who used to travel with about 9 security agents surrounding him, as if anyone outside the VA would even know who he was. The VA deserves better than Max Cleland, again.
Thats the one thing that I always found interesting about the chief of the VA. I can see the guy traveling with one secretary or exec...and maybe one bodyguard. But the truth is....99 percent of America...and even 99 percent of the retired military public wouldn’t recognize the guy or care. I feel the same about the Secretary of Commerce. The government ought to sit down and think about the costs of security and what each one of these idiots are costing the public. These new “Czar” positions? Will they require high security?
Ole ‘’horse play with hand grenades’’ is back again.
The last person we need heading Veteran’s Affairs.
I couldn’t have agreed with you more. Why don’t they pick someone like this former Marine? He had quite a record working for veterans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_R._Vargas
maybe he can tell the troops the dangers of picking up your own hand grenades.
This is a pity. There’s much to be done at the VA, what with all the new returning vets. Max is hardly the right man to do it.
Well republicans finally have an issue. Why bring back this man. LOL I’m sure Obama can find somebody else.
If anyone has a scan of the naked Cleland photo (circa 1999) from Vanity Fair, here would be a good place to post it.
