As might be expected, Ayers attempted to minimize his connection with Obama despite the extensive record and despite the fact that Obama himself told the media that they were in touch as recently as early 2007.
But the New Yorker notes something the Post glossed over:
Ayers says his contacts with "the Obama circle" continued until "his name became part of the campaign maelstrom."
Now the "maelstrom" really only began a few weeks ago when Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists," which indeed was one focus of the interviews today.
So unlike the millions of people that Ayers compared himself to in the interview whom he said would want to get to know Obama better (hey, who can argue with that - we are all wondering who Obama is given his relationship with a former terrorist and lifelong authoritarian and neo-stalinists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn),
**we know now from both Obama and Ayers that their relationship existed and continued into the campaign period itself.
Nonetheless, the reporters avoided probing Ayers on what his role was with the Obama circle.
I have already reported that it was significant and that in fact Ayers is part of a select group that includes only himself and Bernardine Dohrn inside the inner circle, and that the couple advises Obama and his wife Michelle directly and personally.
To remind readers that reporting included a credible source stating, among other things, that Ayers and Dohrn speak regularly with either Obama or his wife and have been involved in "vetting" campaign advisors and potential appointees and that Ayers and Axelrod spoke regarding efforts to prevent access to the records of work Ayers and Obama did together on the Chicago Annenberg Challenge from 1995 until 2002.
Since neither Ayers nor Dohrn have formal roles in the campaign organization (beneath them no doubt) they can continue to use that as a means to convince people that they are not involved.
Ayers appears to confirm the structure of his relationship to the campaign when he told The New Yorker:
"I felt from the beginning that the Obama campaign had to run the Obama campaign and I have to run my life."
Now why would someone who was NOT very involved with Obama have to make such a decision? Thus it did not surprise me at all as it did The New Yorker that Ayers was "curiously calm and cheerful" about the way he has been treated in the campaign.
Ayers knew where he stood and knows where he stands now. And so now the battle for the soul of the next Presidency moves to another stage.
(The obsequious non-reporting coming from the Post and the New Yorker only serves to remind how far those two pillars of modern American journalism have fallen from the days when they spoke truth to power. For a reminder of what that really meant to this country watch All The President's Men when you have a chance.)
We knew the extent of this association. Geez, Obama has Ayers on push to talk.

Okay, so here’s the thing about Bill Ayers.
He’s nuts. A certified lunatic.
His obsession is with black people. His two kids, sons I think, are name after dead black panthers.
He has, since young, been obsessed with black people and please don’t call this any kind of idealogy. Nuts is crazy and crazy is nuts. People are born or become obsessed with all sorts of stuff and for whatever reason, Ayers sees himself as a savior of the black race. He isn’t a communist or a socialist of even a radical. The guy is a lunatic.
It’s why he back Obama, why he ghost-wrote his book, why is introduced Obama to the world via his living room, why he hates this country which mistreats black people, at least as he sees it. William Ayers desperately wishes he was born a black man. He’s a nut.
Nuts seldom get elected and nuts of this sort usually end up in jail. This guy is a professor, how scary is this?

Now that the election is over, these slugs are coming out of their holes and into the light of day. They will flaunt their roles in this {{shudder}} obama administration - they won’t be able to contain themselves.
Perhaps this will enable them to hang themselves. I pray something does them in (politically of course).
I believe obama is not choosing his cabinet, Soros is. Obama is an empty shell, a “patsy” if you will. This is evident to me when he’s been off-script.
Obama is Bill Ayers surrogate. The change that Obama promises will be Bill Ayers change. Obama was picked by the radical insiders because he has the right genes and upbringing and can look and play the part of leader.
Isn’t Obama getting briefed today on “above top-secret” classified programs (like covert stuff going on in certain countries)? The fact that he still has contact with the likes of Ayers is really scary.
I have to agree with you. I was never emotionally invested in having McCain as POTUS. A small part of me is actually glad he will not be president. So I know my funk is not because “my guy lost.” McCain was not, strictly speaking, my guy. Sarah was another matter. *SIGH*
There was no other rational choice but McCain. But look what we got anyway. We needed a Reagan, and we got a Castro; a Chavez; a Mussolini... mark my words (as dumBiden said).
I’m usually quite optimistic on any given topic so I can’t tell you how much I hate feeling this way. But I cannot shake the feeling of impending doom. I felt bad things were coming back in 1992 and I was right, but that was nothing compared to this. Now I feel there are very bad things in store. VERY bad.
I literally cried yesterday because I doubt we have a real Republic anymore. Not sure how long that’s even been true. The Founders, particularly Franklin and Washington, knew the dangers of losing a Republic to a more sinister form of government. How they knew this still amazes me.
We as conservatives must fight to salvage what is still strong and restore our Republic. We must FIGHT.

It gives one a good sense of the background of B. Ayers and his wife with regard to communists, meeting with North Vietnam agents in Cuba and the like. I was in college at the time and had a good “street view”.
