Each year since 2005, the US government has levied taxes and then transferred over a trillion dollars per year in social welfare spending. Since 1965, the year the War on Poverty began, the US government has shared tens of trillions of dollars in wealth to fight a poverty rate that remains unchanged, at 14%, from 1964 to today.
In this election, Obama promises to share the wealth. Barney Frank asserts that there are plenty of rich people we can tax to recover this money the Democrats plan to spend as if you absconded with the funds. Hillary famously said that the Left would take things away from [us] on behalf of the common good. And, of course, Joe Biden asserts it is patriotic for the rich to pay more taxes. All of them are channeling FDR who, at a campaign stop in 1936, said increasing the tax paid by individuals in the higher brackets was the American thing to do and increasing still further the taxes paid by individuals in the highest brackets was even more the American thing to do.
It is the Lefts assumption, in cherishing those socialist beliefs, that Americans will slavishly continue to work and pay taxes regardless of how confiscatory the taxes they face. Human nature, history, and experience tells us otherwise which brings us to Atlas Shrugged.
In 1957, the Russian author, Ayn Rand, published her epic novel Atlas Shrugged. Atlas, of course, was the Greek God who upheld the World upon his shoulders. The characters of Rand's book, across a broad spectrum of fields, in an epic and idealistic struggle, go on strike against societys high taxes and government control.

I’m just getting ready to start Atlas Shrugged and I’m sure it’ll be as relevant today as ever. I just finished The Fountainhead not too long ago and am officially a Rand fan.
Barack Obama has also put forth a plan to send US taxpayer money to fight world poverty. By this definition of “wealth”, everyone who earns more than a dollar a month will be “sharing his wealth”.
I will not be spending one dime with an Obama Voter...period.
Barack thinks “the rich” include plumbers. Notice from his ‘Joe the Plumber’ exchange that he thought it was perfectly plausible that a plumber would be among “the rich” as far as his tax increases are concerned.
Here we are, back to the same old dumb left wing economic policies that screwed this country in the 1970s. Props to all the Yuppies who are voting for Mussolini Jr, may you enjoy it when the tax man bends you over to pay for your blessed “change” and “hope”.
Thanks for calling political vanguard to my attention. I checked it out.
So NOW what we have, folks, is the pot calling the kettle any color other than the color it is.
I'm afraid this is goodbye to our nation.
Next the commies will send everyone to work camps if they don't produce. Shucks...guess Ann didn't think that one through all the way huh?
Forget about an alarm clock..machine guns are much louder.
Ok, it’s not socialist
It’s pure Marxist drivel.
I will have a “Who is John Galt?” sticker in the back window of my car no matter who wins the election.
The truly wealthy, like Teresa Heinz and John Kerry, who are enjoying a $500 million fortune, do not pay any Federal tax on that wealth.
Only INCOME, not WEALTH, is taxed yearly by the Federal Government.
The year he ran for President, John Kerry had a lower Income Tax bill than I did.
The "rich" that Barney Frank talks about are the high EARNERS that are busting their butts.
America will, from now on, drastically penalize high earners?
Fine. I will elect to no longer be one.
A medical colleague and I discussed yesterday that, if Obama goes through with his "spread the wealth" Bravo Sierra promises, we will simply cut back our medical practices, take a lot more time off, not earn as much income and let Obama know that we have shrugged.
Somebody else can then be labeled the evil "rich".
self-ping.
...just until I need glasses though.
I’m with you...I’m glad I get to be the generation that gets to vacation before the work camps commence. Enough of them have been warned year after year and they still keep ignoring reality. They have finally sucked all the blood out of their host.
If Joe the Plumber is “the rich”, I would like Obama’s definition of “middle class”. I bet the income levels will overlap. If they don’t he’s doing seriously fuzzy math.
Yep.
It is amazing that Ayn Rand and George Orwell (1984) were so dead-on accurate, even if their timing was a little off.
Me too, Polybius. I am in a different profession than you are, but my Obama defense is in place. The only part of his plan that will affect me directly is his uncapping of earned income subject to FICA. Of course, all of us will be affected indirectly when the recession is a lot deeper and longer than it otherwise would be and our children pursue their careers in a decidedly less prosperous country. I was the first person in my family to have any money, and I will probably be the last.
I actually started reading 1984 the other week. Had to put it down as it was too disturbing.
