I happen to be a member of the "conservative wing" of the Republican party, and McCain was my LAST choice in the Primary. My Dream ticket during the Primary was Duncan Hunter/Sarah Palin..... I was thrilled to see McCain was able to convince Sarah Palin to join his ticket, however I am afraid it just might not be enough.. Sarah Palin is doing a great job energizing us conservatives, however it takes more than "vote for me becuase my opponent is worse" camaign to win an election.... few if any conservatives are excited about the "McCain" campaign which is reflected in the poll, however I am cautiously optimistic than come November, many of us will hold our nose and vote for McCain just because of Sarah Palin.
She is.
They always leave out the fear of Obama himself.
I agree with you regarding McCain, myself I would have been very happy to see Huckabee in this race - I am a huge fan of FairTax.
I think conservatives need to understand exactly what is at stake here and we might as well take the course that many are taking in regard to their vote about Obama.
Let’s vote for Sarah Palin because she IS conservative, PERIOD.
I am sure they will call us racists for it but we need to stop the Obamanation from happening...
It will. I’m one of the ones holding my nose and voting for McCain.
Unfortunately though, a huge sector of Conservatives are actually choosing to cast their ballot for the Constitutional Party. Their reasoning? Sarah Palin should not be the VP because she is a mother of five and should be seeing to her responsibilities at home.
I’m trying to get it through these peoples heads that a vote NOT for McCain is a vote FOR Obama.
We’re a divided country, we don’t have the luxury of voting for third parties and have it actually help a thing. It only hinders the most conservative of the two candidates from winning.
Many people (including a handful of conservative pundits that should know better) have been convinced by the media that Sarah Palin was a horrible choice and reflect badly on John McCain. McCain and/or the GOP need to run ads explaining, in some detail, Palin’s accomplishments in Alaska — the gas pipeline and standing up to the oil interests, turning in corrupt members of her own party, cutting spending, and basically her leadership in getting things. done. If they raise Sarah Palin’s boat, they’ll raise McCain’s boat and they need to do that.
You are asking the wrong question.
Is Obama not enough for conservatives to pull the lever for McCain?
If not, why not?
DUDE, this base is energized like NEVER before, at least since Reagan, and that is largely but not COMPLETELY due to Palin-—McCain himself took on a little of the “Reagan magic” just by picking her, and lots of people flocked BACK to him because of it. His performance since then has been imperfect, but on balance, he has finally come out of himself as much as he’s ever gonna, and the prognosis for his election, in my eyes, looks good.
Obama doesn’t have as much crossover appeal as is being widely publicized now. The only way he even MIGHT win is massive voter fraud, which, if it is uncovered, (and believe me, it looks like it will have to be) will make this a hotly contested, hotly investigated, and decidedly ruinous experience for Obama. Remember the first contested election of 2000 was due to what was politely termed a “mistake”, with the old lady Wexler voters, then morphed into ballot irregularities, malfunctioning machines etc. and then “voter suppression”.By the end of it, it was obvious that the entire electoral process had been tentatively “deconstructed”. ACORN was probably around then, also, developing its fraud chops, but this time around they are a MAJOR player in the outcome of this election. Jennifer Brunner, for one, needs to be indicted before it’s too late. She has obviously received her legal counsel and marching orders as to how important her “swing state” could be to the election. If the results are at all close, this could be very ugly.
That’s right. The fear of 50%+ taxes, the Fairness Doctrine on steroids and a decade of Socialism and Politically Correct policies in the extreme are scaring me into pulling the lever for McCain no matter who is on the ticket. Palin is a nice addition.
that IS the same question, only I think the way I worded it makes the point a bit stronger... the “vote for me because the other guy sucks more” strategy is NOT a winning strategy IMHO..
I would have held my nose and voted for McCain anyway - but I will vote enthusiastically for this team, and am happy to be supportive financially, and with my time because Palin is on the ticket.
I'll be voting for the First White ex-POW War-Hero to be President.
Yes
David, we’re ‘pulling the lever’ AGAINST Obama. I could never knowingly vote for a Marxist.
David, the time to worry about that was back during the primaries.
Once McCain had the nomination sewed up, it was time to compare our only two choices for President realistically and make the pragmatic choice.
I'll bet you can remember when McCain had near zero support on Free Republic. I was in the crowd that was complaining loudly about our dismal pick of a candidate, but like a lot of others, I realized that November was coming, and I sure as hell wasn't going to be voting for the Marxist.
We have to look to the future for a better standard bearer of our conservative ideals. In most of our minds, that person is now Sarah.
Yup. Exactly.
David you are right, but those bumper stickers were such fun until after the convention and we had “ something to vote for”.
Election year polling has unrealistically favored the Dems since at least 1976.
Even when the pollsters have correctly predicted a win for the Democrat, they've erred in overestimating the margin of victory. When the Republican won, they've underestimated the margin of victory. In close races, like 2004, they've wrongly called it for the Democrat.
Check out Ann Coulter's great article about this today.
reading these comments and knowing historical poll data is what makes me cautiously optimistic.. we are nowhere close to “sealing the deal”... we need ALL conservatives to step up the plate and vote for Sarah Palin for VP.
Re your post 19.......Outstanding analogy!
As an individual Palin has done more for a ticket than any ticket since LBJ brought more electoral votes than Kennedy to their ticket.
But is that enough to overcome the weakness of McCain. Note that it is McCain who hurts McCain and not Obama. For example, McCain-Feingold could be the single biggest reason McCain loses.
But the big difference is the ground game. In ‘94 we had the Contract with America. That energized us. But it did not get us to the polls on election day. There are many energized supporters who never vote.
The Ground Game of the Moral Majority/Christian Coalition is what turned “energy” into votes. Since ‘94 we have, for the most part, not had a ground game. OH and FL in 2004 are an exception. In contrast, From day 1 20 years ago, Obama has been all about the ground game. Why is Obama doing well in MT? The ground game.
