(vanity) Cat teethbrushing experiences: DO TELL
9/28/08 | marty_f

So earlier today we had a most illuminating thread on the travails of bathing one's cat.

Now I'd like to hear from cat owners' experiences with brushing their cats' teeth:

We have a cute little kitteh or two here whose breath is beginning to represent The Crypt. And I've heard that remedial dental work on cats can be $pendy as all get-out.

By far, a cat is the most dangerous when irritated.

LOL! I don't know about monkies and llamas, but cats hold a grudge - so even after they attack there is no guarantee they won't re-attack a week later...just because!

... cats hold a grudge .... Years ago we had a female calico -- the sweetest, lovingist cat you ever saw.

Then one day we had to take her to the vet. She got thru the shot OK, but refused to open her mouth for the pill. Being the big tough soldier, I volunteered to accomplish that simple chore. Well, to make that long story short -- two puncture wounds to two fingers, and then she would not stay in the same room with me under any circumstances for FIVE YEARS almost to the day.

And I always thought Englishmen held the prize for snubbing if they don't like you. No more. Angel still holds that title.

Uh-oh. Friends of mine have a kitty ~1 year old who’s losing her adult teeth for reasons unknown. If you have the time, I’d appreciate it if you can provide additional details and maybe any other symptoms you observed.

Cats are perfect killers, and I think most people do not understand that. They have that instinct down.

I have seen a male barn cat fight down a dog three times it's size. They are confident.

Male cats, fully equipped, have little fear. Female cats with litters will fight anything to the death. They have no fear, and will sacrifice all to protect the young ones.

That they will interact with humans says volumes. I respect them, I admire working cats.

Our house cats tolerate us.

Stick to dry food and put a little Vick’s Vapor Rub under your nose when the cat breathes on you. The dry food will keep their teeth clean and the Vicks will keep you from noticing the cats’ breath.<<<

Still laughing.

I was reading so seriously and you got the Vicks out.

There should be a special award for you photo.

It is difficult to not think that it was “with full intent” brushing its teeth.

Excellent photo for this thread, LOL, or any thread.

Please help the animal rescue. Very simple and you don’t have to pay a thing.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple. Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on the purple box for free. This doesn’t cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here’s the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

See post #89.

KPL'ers, I'm pinging you because this is an easy way to help animals. NAPL'ers, I'm pinging you because this is an easy way to help animals, and for the WTF factor in seeing an Internet rumor that's actually true.

An attempt to brush my cat’s teeth in February of this year cost me my life.

I'm sorry to hear that.
So, what, exactly, enables you to post now? This is for future reference, so I'll know what to do when the time comes.

This gorgeous beast here, the late great King of Cats, Rocket J. Squirrel, used to like having his teeth brushed. Didn't do a lot of good, since he still had problems with tooth decay (the vet said it was genetic with him, he had softer than usual cat teeth.)

When we lived in Boston, we had a nightly ritual. He'd go sit on the toilet tank, I'd load up a cat tooth brush with beef flavored toothpaste and he'd allow me to brush his teeth. I kid you folks not. This cat was special that way.

Tell you what, donate some blood and have them hold it in reserve for you. You will need it later.

Just as an FYI - Bloodless way to give a cat a pill...

(Yea I really did have to figure this out, I know my cat loves me but he will tear out my soul if he can should I try to give him a pill)

You crush the pill between two spoons to a fine powder. Take a dab of butter and mix it thoroughly with the powdered pill. Grab cat's front leg firmly and spread butter/powder mix onto fir. Release cat. The cat will be pissed off, but you will lose no blood and he will go clean himself thereby taking his medicine. This works, I have to do it every day it seems.

I forgot to mention, he’d also purr the entire time, the sweet little whackjob. Man, I miss him.
