McCaskill: Russia war would mean draft
politico.com ^ | September 12, 2008 | Ben Smith

From the AP:

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said Palin's suggestion of war with Russia "sent chills down my spine."

"I'm not sure that Gov. Palin understands that right now, if that were to occur, we would have to institute a massive draft," McCaskill said.

To be fair to Palin, all she was doing was stating the consequence of the NATO treaty, should Georgia be admitted.

But one of the rules of talking about NATO enlargement -- followed by McCain and Obama -- has generally been not explicitly discussing war with Russia, and indeed sometimes insisting to the Russians (a bit implausibly, perhaps) that it's not about them.

UPDATE: RNC communications director Danny Diaz responds, ad feminam: "Claire McCaskill’s penchant to say absurd and ridiculous things has now reached Bidenesque levels."

McCaskill is a Senator? In no way is McCaskill intelligent enough to be a Senator from anywhere since there was NO understanding of what happened in Gibsons interview with Palin. And this person is concerned about Palin? Gee Whiz...another ignorant democrat. I don’t think America can take any more STUPID Senators from the left, who can’t tell the difference from answering a question about NATO, and a declaration of I plan to go to war. Idiots all.

Damn dumb dims always trying to float the draft at every opportunity. The volunteer military just isn’t good enough.

Excellent response, Mr. Diaz. I may plagiarize it from time to time (inserting the appropriate names, of course).

here we go again with the draft “boogeyman” syndrome. Rangel first spouted this nonsense in 2005 with the Iraq war, now another nonsensical politician throws his worthless 2 cents.

She didn't "discuss" it. She was pestered into acknowledging the possibility by the condescending Charlie Gibson, who was doing anything he could to score a "gotcha". He looked like an ass, since Sarah was simply stating support for current United States policy.

I’m not sure that the draft is a big concern when the war in question is fought with intercontinental nuclear missiles.

Oh, and secondly...what part of OBAMA’S “MANDATORY SERVICE PLAN’ doesn’t McCaskill understand...it’s a draft. Only there will be “no conscientious objectors”, since Obama explained his plan on the Service Forum at Columbia. There would be a military and civilian side of this “Mandatory Service Plan”..(DRAFT) Obama said ‘ALL’ should have to take responsibility by either being in military or civilian service and “all” go to war. The civilian side would “support in war zone” the military heirarchy. Of course he took an extra 1000 (exageration) words to say that. “A rose by any other name is still a rose”...so it’s a draft of ALL young people, and no more volunteer military.

A draft? With the current generation? lmao.

Take me. Please.

Love America, no kids (that I’m aware of), no wife, no debts, and I don’t care about pay or benefits.

Gasp! Charlie broke the cardinal rule when he mentioned Russia!

Good grief. “To be fair to Palin”? How about just being honest with his reporting regardless of what’s fair.

If we go to war with Russia I don’t think a large number of ground forces will be necessary.

A phrase I seem to be using more and more in reference to Democrats and their absolute meltdown in the face of The Real Thing: McCain/Palin: “Oh, Lord, what a TOOL!”

There are lots and lots and lots and LOTS of Eastern Europeans who would love nothing more than to give the Russians a taste of their own medicine.

And the Russians know it.
