WE HAVE BECOME A NATION LOOKING FOR PHOTO-OPS

We have become a nation of onlookers.

We have our news programming interrupted with alerts of high speed chases on interstates. We salivated when we watched OJ's car going ever so slowly on the southern California freeway. We watch President Bush's motorcade when it's going somewhere. We don't really know which vehicle he's in because there's an entourage of big black SUVs. And now, all the presidential candidates have picked up that color scheme.

It's a ploy, folks! They think it makes them look presidential, therefore get more votes. Not when empty suits and (as one Freeper said this morning) stuffed shirts are sitting in the back seats or jump seats, or wherever the privileged elite sit when they're in there behind smoky glass windows.

This morning, a helicopter must have been hovering over the front door parking lot at Biden's palatial digs in Delaware. Every once in a while someone would come out and, to the joy of the salivating onlookers, move one of the vehicles a few feet, then go back inside.

The newsies waited and waited and waited. I continued to clean the hardwood floors in the living room. (Our house is modest; we don't have a media suite.)

Finally, everybody came outside the house and headed for the vehicles. Full dress entourage!

We watched them from a lofty helicopter perched above as they made their way to the airport. And then we watched da plane climb into the morning air, headed for Illinois.

Quint was in his Laz-E-Boy hurling glib comments toward the TV, his voice filled with glee that the Change-We-Can-Believe-In Obama picked an old-time Washington know-it-all Senator who's been in office since Obama was 10 years old. Talk about being part of the Ever Ready Institution of Sock It To The Voters Party!

I feel for all our Colorado relatives, some of whom work in Denver. Maybe they'll take a vacation next week.

But for today, all eyes are in Springfield, Illinois. That's because Obama wants to appear Lincolnesque as he stands in front of the Old State Capitol to introduce his running mate.

He does know that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, doesn't he? And Obama ought to also know that it was the Republican party that freed the slaves in the United States. We need to say that loud and often. We, as Republicans, need to be very proud of that fact.
