Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata (D-Oakland) said he welcomed Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggers proposed 1-cent sales tax hike as a start, but feared it wouldnt be enough to meet the governments needs.
Im glad the governor has come around to saying publicly what weve known all along--that people arent doing enough to support us here at the state, Perata said. But we have to take even bolder steps to ensure we have sufficient resources to fund our programs.
Perata said that the Democratic caucus was looking at the vast hoard of money stashed away in savings accounts, mutual funds, and 401Ks. It is unconscionable that the so-called owners of these resources are selfishly withholding this money while their government is strapped for cash, Perata charged. Collective need should take priority over private greed.
The Democratic leadership is looking at a plan that would transfer excess balances from idle accounts to the state treasury. People who are working dont need this money right now, Perata contended. We will use this money to cover state expenses during the crisis. Later, if these people cant work anymore and need help, the state will take care of them. Its a win-win solution.

As someone living in Crook County (Chicago area) with Daley’s 10.25% sales tax, I’ve lost the ability to detect satire in articles like this.
What is the sales tax in Kalifornia? After the hike, that is?
Is this satire? I can’t really tell. Jesse Action Jackson floated soemwhat the same proposal about 20 years ago.
I can’t tell anymore whether an article is satire.
Don’t give the D’s ideas Mr. Semmens. I believe Germany actually has a tax on one’s financial assets whether you made money or not on your portfolio. Steffi Graf and/or her dad got into trouble with German tax law for not paying this “wealth tax”.
Also, I believe some leftie like Jesse Jackson proposed the gov’t take a percentage of 401k and IRS and use it for “urban development investments” or something of that ilk.
Great satire yet again, John. But please, don't give the Dems any ideas...
I believe it is currently 7 3/4% now. So that would be 8 3/4%. But others may know for sure.
10.25 %? Whoa, and I thought here in Calif. the sales taxes were way too high. I think where I live, It’s about 7 1/2 percent. At least for the time being.
The sales tax rate depends on local taxes as well, but in most areas it is around 8.25%, usually a half-point less in the Republican areas.
Hey Arnold stop being a girly man, and stop listening to your tax loving Kennedy family wife.
It looks like they are going to torture the golden goose before they kill it.
Collective need should take priority over private greed.
Didn’t Hillary same something to the same effect but in different terms - like it’s the need of many over the wants of the few? Pure out and out communism or socialism at it’s worst.
Here in WA the sales tax (depending on county) is around 8.7%. But then, we have no income tax - yet -
Yep, I dug these up from a bunch of e-mail exchanges I had with a few friends last year (I have a friend who likes to argue with liberal friends by e-mail, and then "cc:" me on the messages :-p):
"We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
And also that it's... "time to reject the idea of an 'on your own' society and to replace it with shared responsibility for shared prosperity," she [Clinton] said. "I prefer a 'we're all in it together' society."
The problem is, self-sacrifice in the interest of others is great when it is an individual's decision. But when it becomes mandated by the government, we are 90% of the way to dangerous and oppressive socialism.
Right - that was it ... the whole Democrat Party scares the living bejesus out of me ... anyone who is a Liberal or Democrat. I remember hearing Larry King asking about Conservative compassion (I just accidentally ran across the station and was bored). I screamed at the radio: SHOW ME OR LIST ONE LIBERAL ORGANIZATION THAT FEEDS THE HUNGRY, CLOTHES THE NAKED OR HOUSES THE HOMELESS (sorry, rant off) - Liberals/Damo-crats .... grrrrrrrrr
