Senator John McCain invites potential running mates to his ranch. Who do you like?

Posted on 05/25/2008 2:02:16 PM PDT by Sun

I heard on tv that Gov. Bobby Jindal, Mitt Romney, Gov. Charlie Crist, Rob Portman, Senator Sam Brownback, Senator Joe Lieberman were invited to Senator McCain's ranch, and some (or all) are potential running mates.

So I'm doing some research on them, and would like to hear what other FReepers think about these people.

Of course, it's not a "done deal" that any of these will be the running mate, and it could be someone entirely different. I also like Sen. John Thune, Governor Palin, J.C. Watts, Michael Steele and a few others.

Pick one? Man, it’s like picking zits.

Jindahl, I suppose, but he swore over and over he wouldn’t consider it if he was elected governor. So what does he do, start off with a lie?

At this point, I don’t think it much matters. My vote didn’t count, did yours?

Governor Palin. She shares McCain's "maverick" streak and has bucked the GOP establishment as well (but in a good way though as the AK GOP was full of RINOs). She would attract the women vote from the Dems since it's likely Hillary won't be nominated. If McCain chooses her, I will upgrade my decision from not voting for him to holding a clothespin, getting drunk, and voting for him.

Governors Mark Sanford of SC & Mike Rounds of SD are also excellent choices. Both are in their early 50s, both have served six years as Governor & plus Sanford also has Congressional experience. Both are across-the-board conservative Republicans. Spare me the other choices guys, McCain is not going to choose another Senator or a Congressman according to Da Rules of VP selection, he's going to go with a Governor for sure (hopefully not Crist or Perry).

If McCain wants to win, he should be doing everything possible to get Colin Powell on the ticket with him.

ROFL - you're kidding or smoking meth, right?

I oppose McCain, so I do not care who he picks. FL’s gov is a moron and should not be allowed within 1,000 miles of the Oval Office, this because of his anti off shore drilling.

Thanks for you list.

I assume those are the folks that you like (not the ones you think McCain will pick).

Can you tell us in a couple of words, or so, why you like your top five picks?

I think McCain is going to lose no matter who runs with him, but just for fun, I would like to see Hillary get the GOP #2 slot.

“Governor Palin. “

That would be the most logical thing for McCain to do. At least we’d have someone pleasant to look at for 4 years. For all the talk a year ago about candidates looks and then to come up with the little troll McCain is beyond me.

Don’t get me wrong, Powell wouldn’t be my first choice (or in the top 50, for that matter). But looking at this dispassionately, I think a McCain/Powell ticket would draw a very sharp contrast between an experienced, serious ticket v. what the Dems will offer.

Add Hillary to the mix and they can form a tripartite Third Way committee. Ask Dan Rather to become propaganda minister...

Senator McCain said at C-PAK that he would reach out to conservatives.

If he picked Crist or Lieberman, he would be breaking his promise. These two are liberals - BIG TIME.

Oh, it would be a winning ticket, to be sure. Maybe McCAin will pick Powell since he can’t decide the difference between dems and R’s.

“If McCain wants to win, he should be doing everything possible to get Colin Powell on the ticket with him.”

Sorry, but I definitely would not vote for McCain if it were a liberal, like Powell, but Powell doesn’t want it, anyway.

We ought to stick to more realistic poential running mates, who WANT the job.

I won't vote for McCain, can't, won't.

My fav of the group would be Bobby Jindal; but, I really (really, really!), don't want to waste him on that old war-horse McCain who thinks that maybe putting a conservative on the ticket is going help the rest of us have amnesia about how he has behaved toward us in the past 8 years.

Bobby Jindal is someone I want to vote for, for PRESIDENT. I do not want to waste him in the VP spot. I would like to see him work in LA and do some fix-up there (which would be a Herculean task), and then take that resume and run for President in 2012.

The last interview I saw with Powell he said he hadn’t decide whether he was going to vote republican or democrat in the prez race.

Well, then, that would make him a perfect running mate for McCain.

Nice list. Any reason John Bolton couldn’t be considered? Also Pawlenty not listed.

Last night on the news they said Gov. Bobby Jindal, Mitt Romney, and Gov. Charlie Crist were meeting with him and those were the only ones mentioned. They said Mitt and Crist were being considered for the amounts of money they could raise to advertise with. My personal preference of the three is Bobby Jindah. He’s an amazing man and would add so much to McCain’s campaign. IMHO, that’s just what McCain needs.
