Vanity - Privacy Fencing

Posted on 04/23/2008 5:59:37 AM PDT by IMissPresidentReagan

Hey everyone, sorry for another vanity, but I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations on economical privacy fencing? I have requested quotes from a couple of people, and we really liked the bamboo fencing (mostly because it offered an 8 foot height), but we are open to suggestions.

A nosey neighbor has become a problem for us, so we thought a privacy fence would be perfect! We, however, have a lot of dogs, and a half acre to fence, so I would like something durable, yet not too insanely expensive.

Anyone with any knowledge in this area please help!

Echo post #2, check your local zoning = task #1. Some localities are perfectly happy with a 5 or 6 foot fence and go completely bonkers with an 8’ fence.

We installed the pre-made fence sections (8' wide by 6' tall) from Lowe's two years ago. We fenced 80' along the back and 144' along the side (other side was already fenced by our neighbors). So for 224' of fencing, posts, concrete, permit, taxes, and delivery fee, it cost us only $2,300, some beer, and roughly one weekend and a few week-nights.

We have seen very high winds in our area (Rio Rancho, NM). Sustained in the 40 mph range and some gusts up to 60 mph and have had no problems with it...we get a lot of wind. We compared the cost of the pre-mades with running stringers and installing individual boards, cost difference was negligible and time saved was amazing. Once the posts were set, just hold up the panel, level it and 6 screws later, it's on.

We have Beagles. They are not hugh diggers.
However, we put a bottom rail on the chain link fence.
You can also bury the chain link in the ground 6-10” and put a tension cable or wire on the bottom.

What kind of dogs do you have ?

You could also search out dog breeders of your breed through the AKC website and ask those breeders what they have done. Most breeders use chainlink because of the cost factor. We bought our privacy slats through Acadamy Fence out of NJ.

The bamboo fence is cut bamboo. I had not seen the living bamboo barriers, but I imagine it would be difficult to maintain. I thought moving to the country I'd have more privacy with more space, but it seems just the opposite is true. Who knew that a one bedroom apartment in the city, with neighbors literally on the other side of the wall would have been more private than 1/2 acre of land.

This guy owns the field next to our property, gets drunk, rides on his ATV over to the field and just stares at our property, occasionally cursing at me (never my husband). It's to the point where I don't like to be home alone anymore, even with all of our dogs there.

We've had several problems with one of our dogs being reported as running loose, but when we arrive home, the dog in question is always on his runner.

So I'm hoping if this dude doesn't know when we are home or not, or can't see what is going on, he'll leave us alone. The sad part for me is that he lives with his parents, who are super nice people.

I wish it were just my windows. Much cheaper and a lot less hassle. If it wouldn’t look so bad, I would only put up a barrier between our property and his field so he couldn’t see over.

Also, we put the privacy slats only on the side the nosey neighbor was on.
The bigger the area you fence in the less likely they are to dig out.

The two dogs that keep digging in are my neighbors’ border collies. I have a variety of dogs. My two labs are not huge diggers, our pug/schnauzer cross is not outside enough to dig, but my basenji will occassionally dig. She’s getting on in years now, so it’s not as big a problem as it used to be.

I think I’ll have to look into the bottom rail. The previous owners had only half-a**ed the fence and we’ve spent enough money repairing it that we should have just bought a new one to being with.

If this man behaved like this to me, forget the privacy fence, I would move.

Whoops, memory failed. We fenced 80’ across the back and 184’ down one side - total of 264’ for $2,300. Not bad, about $8.71/foot.

Have you tried asking the Government for help in building your fence?

/sar

True Checkoff has a real deal on a lightly used invisible fence, don't know what that would do about the neighbor, but if you have that many dogs, the neighbor just might kick in some of the expense, to help his noisy neighbor keep his dog in his yard.

We did about 270-290 lineal feet. It was not cheap ($5500)installed by the local fence co.
We installed the privacy slats on 150 lineal feet ourselves. We paid about $850 for 150 feet of coverage.

Send me a private reply and I will send you pics if you like.

That’s the problem I think is only the back yard is currently fenced in, whereas, when we redo it, I want to do the entire property. My husband is afraid he’ll have to work on it so he’s opposed to enlarging the fenced area. *LOL*

Video tape his antics. Get the local yokels involved. If nothing else, breach of peace charges, or peeping tom type charges. If he accidentally comes on your property (make sure you can define the line in your video), nail him for trespassing. Make his life generally miserable. Open carry on your property is generally legal in most unincorporated areas.

Don’t let him win. Moving is likely not an option. Have you discussed the issue with the parents? Nice works best, but they may be more likely to curb the problem with the threat of legal action. May be worth the cost of losing them as “friends” in this case.

I wish that were an option right now. However, with our dogs, and all we’ve put into this house, we would really like to stay. Other than this man, our other neighbors are wonderful. My problem isn’t that I don’t like to be alone because I’m afraid of him; I don’t like to be alone because I am confrontational, and I realize antagonizing the situation will not solve anything. What he doesn’t know is I’ve got my conceal and carry license, so I’m waiting for the day I can shoot the tire off his ATV, should it ever set foot on my property. :)

I suggest driving around your neighborhood and looking around to see what you like. No shame in being a copycat.

If there’s enough room, Carolina Cherry makes a formidable barrier. It’s a tree that becomes a bush, is evergreen, and will grow to 30 feet tall. Your neighbors will hate you for it! :)

If you decide to do it via shrubbery but you still need to have a dog barrier, just do a T-Stake and welded wire fence, which is dirt cheap. Then run some black poly-hose for irrigation and plant the Carolina Cherry.

I put in about 600’ of 6’ cedar picket fence and am convinced that you’re crazy to use anything other than 2 3/8” oil pipe for the posts for that type of fence, which will stand up to just about anything, and outlast us all.

Yesterday, after the sheriff came and documented the treatment I bestow upon my pets, I did inform the man, and his parents, that the next time the sheriff received a call it would be considered harrassment, and that I fully intended to pursue legal action re:defamation of character and slander, as a couple of other people had told me he’d said that I “neglected” my animals.

I wish now that all the times I heard him riding his ATV at 3:30 in the morning I’d called and complained.

I’ve been trying to convince my husband we need security cameras for a while now, hopefully this will help him.

All great suggestions!
