Road to Des Moines Conversions on Immigration (Hunter Press release)
News Which Cannot Lose ^ | 10/25/07 | Duncan Hunter/staff

Posted on 10/26/2007 11:42:37 AM PDT by pissant

Washington, D.C. – Republican presidential candidate Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) criticized fellow GOP contenders Thompson and Romney after they released ‘position papers’ on illegal immigration apparently discovering only just recently the policy he has been advocating for years.

Both the Romney and Thompson plans talk tough on border security and cracking down on illegal immigration, but the plans beg the question as to why their records don’t reflect such rhetoric.

Rep. Hunter explained, “I can tell you that my proposals to significantly increase and strengthen deportations, penalties, interior and border enforcement, and to curtail the incentives for illegal aliens generally had few vocal allies in the US Senate…Mr. Thompson certainly was not among them.”

He continued, “As for Mr. Romney, the fact that many cities in Massachusetts were, and remain, protected sanctuaries for illegal aliens, makes one wonder if this is just one more of the those ‘I saw the light’ moments.”

While Congressman Hunter is pleased to see the GOP candidates move towards the positions he has been advocating for decades, he stated, “watching Senator Thompson, Governor Romney, Mayor Giuliani and now even Governor Huckabee attempting to outflank one another on this issue is, frankly, amusing; after long careers where the problem was either ignored, or in some cases, exacerbated”.

Rep. Hunter authored and shepherded legislation that built a two-layer border fence outside of San Diego leading to a 53% drop in crime and 90% decrease in drug trafficking along that corridor. Hunter’s message of a stronger national defense, tighter border security, and fair trade with China is resonating with voters across the nation.

Fred Thompson: Longtime member of the Senate Centrist Coalition. Enough said.

As an avid fan of Hunter, I back him until the GOP convention states he is not the candidate. Then, and only then will I give my full support to Fred which appears to be the likely scenario...

Fred is going to have to truly "Get-up the Giddy-up"... for now, he looks like Bob Dole, without the War hero credentials. We all remember what happened with that nomination against the Clinton machine...

Among other things, Duncan Hunter has the experience to fight the WOT.

Duncan Hunter was Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, where he built up the defense that Clinton tore down, was a Viet Nam Vet (an Army Ranger), won a medal, Hunter went to Iraq five times, and Hunter’s own son is now doing his 3rd tour in the Middle East, so Hunter knows what it’s like to have his own son fight in the present war.

Also, Hunter says that border security is national security, and got a fence built in San Diego, and authored the bill for a fence from California through Texas which was signed into law. Duncan Hunter gets things done!

When Rudy Giuliani was mayor of New York City, the City was an illegal alien sanctuary, and Rudy sued the Federal govt. to keep New York City employees from having to cooperate with the INS, but lost, but Rudy said he would ignore the law. There were also sanctuary cities in Massachusetts when Romney was governor, and they’re still there.

Duncan Hunter stands above the rest!

A C-130 is not a “jet” it is a turboprop aircraft.

>The big isue for the GOP primaries is, which conservative can beat Rudy Giuliani? Which conservative has the best chance to take down the liberal Rockefeller Republican?
Without a doubt, that’s Fred.<

LOL! Without a doubt, Fred is the Rockefeller Republican!

The quip predates Tancredo by a decade or two.

Really? So he's the one that stole it first - disappointing. Perhaps it's a common political saying (that I hadn't heard till now). Thx for the info.

There is a difference between people ignoring him, or the media and GOP ignoring him.

&&&
Exactly. I was so disappointed with the last debate. The questioners spent so much time trying to get the so-called front-runners into spats, it was disgusting. Hunter was asked one stinking question, and he got to speak only one other time, and that was because he raised his hand to respond to someone else,

Huter is a threat to the big money donors in the GOP because he wants to stop the flow of illegals and he wants to clamp down on China’s trade imbalance.

The Rats want Rudy to win because they have a whole lot of mud to sling at him that will stick.

How about *Attempted thread hijacking with a touch of unwarranted criticism*?

If you don’t care for Hunter, find somewhere else to play.

Reagan is dead. Hunter is running for President and is a true conservative as was Reagan. Your joke is telling.

Yes, and even dead I would vote for him if I thought he could win. That was the basis of the question wasn't it? Who would I vote for if I was not afraid they couldn't win?

Hunter, God love him, has about the same shot unless something miraculous happens in the next few weeks.

The poll itself, in light of others taken here, was much more telling than anything I could say or "joke" I could tell. It shows that despite how good Hunter is on the issues, most of us have our feet firmly planted on the ground in regards to his chances. If that’s a problem may I suggest you quit worrying about me and get together with your team and solve the riddle of why Hunter gains no traction despite being the “perfect” Conservative. Solve that, get some momentum and even I may reconsider.

I am a conservative and want my views at the table, not limited to some back room where we pat ourselves on the back about how pure we are. With that result babies still die, immigrants still pour in and terrorist have a field day.

Again, what was more telling?

Conservatives seem to take thier candidates out of the running by declaring them “not viable” early in each primary contest. Conservatives definitely give most of their money to the most conservative candidate supported by the media and the corporate interests money (Nixon, Ford, George Bush I, Dole, George Bush II) instead of making it a contest by giving money and voting for their candidate, a real conservative. Psych! You lose even if your candidate wins! Only Reagan had the power to break through the “Rockefeller” or “RINO” or “Moderate” Republican machine that has been dominant . . .

Uh huh...

No one is taking Hunter out of the running but Hunter. Say you convince everyone who has voted on a poll on Free Republic to back him, what is that, 5000 votes. And that’s among people predisposed to his stances and positions. Then what. What is the solution to a 25+ year congressman who is right on almost all the issues but can’t poll past 2% on average. I don’t know the answer but somebody needs to figure it out in the next 2 months.

That also assumes there is not a viable alternative also. Again Free republic is a conservative forum. When asked who they could support if winning wasn’t an issue, more than a few said Hunter. But in politics winning is the issue, hell it’s the whole issue. Now look at the previous poll and you get Thompson. That means there are more than few around here that think he can take the mantle and win. He may not be pure as Hunter in some eyes but a damn site closer than the R and R boys.

Well seeing as the very conservative AL Gore was the alternative, I guess I’ll take that as a thank you...
