Something to think about here... seriously...

If Fred Thompson would do the RIGHT THING, and withdraw from this race, I believe ALL of his supporters will get behind Duncan Hunter, and with 75% of FReepers united for for Duncan Hunter the Dems would be shaking in their boots.. If Fred really was "Drafted" by conservatives as so many folks claim he was needed because there was no real conservative in the race.. but we have Duncan Hunter, and Fred is just "splitting the vote" IMHO.

As folks get to know Duncan Hunter most come to the conslusion that he is CLEARLY the "Reagan-Conservative" in the race.

FOR AMERICA's SAKE -- DROP FRED - GO HUNTER !!

--- FRedHeads, don't take this as an attack on Fred, he just is not the RIGHT man for job at this time --- Duncan Hunter IS ! -------

david.... I understand your passion for the man you want elected for the job. I too love Hunter, as I do love Thompson but I don’t feel he can do it alone. Thomspon has already said he would not accept 2nd seat; therefore, my only hope to get Conservatives in the White House is a Thompson/Hunter ticket for 08. I have also thought about our future. I believe Thompson can clean up most of this mess we’re in within his 1st term. This will set Hunter up for the White House for the next 8 years after and will give the people plenty of time to know Hunter. I met Duncan Hunter at the GOEIII and I must say, I was very impressed, even more than I was prior to meeting him. But like I said, I’m looking the the most conservative electable ticket for 08 and for me, that is a Thompson/Hunter ticket. I believe they are our top 2 candidates.

>> therefore, my only hope to get Conservatives in the White House is a Thompson/Hunter ticket for 08.

Ideologically - that’d be a fine ticket. Electorally, there is little or no upside to having Duncan Hunter as a VP. He’s a no-name, with few supporters, and probably would bring ZERO voters that Thompson couldn’t carry on his own.

Personally - J.C. Watts, John Cornyn (Sen, TX), and Tommy Franks are my top three choices (probably in that order). They’re all strong conservatives, and I think they’d each have better coattails than Hunter.

Hunter wouldn’t be a bad choice ... I just don’t think he’d be that good a choice, either.

John Cornyn (Sen, TX),

Strong conservative? Year after year trying to push through language in a bill that establishes a giant giveaway to Mexico and starts the SPP?? What we have is a bunch of voters who don't even know the record of the candidates they support.

At least Hunter does not have a terrorist fundraiser as an adviser.

And who is that?

I guess I answered my question that you wouldn’t just from the first one.

“House Vote 560 $100,000 for the St. Joseph’s College Theatre Renovation in Indiana”

THIS was NOT a Duncan Hunter earmark! Which you probably knew. Is the rest of your list dishonest as well?

“$100,000 for the renovation of St. Joseph College’s theatre in Indiana, requested by Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-IN). Amendment failed, 97-328.

Completely obnoxious. You ought to re-read Reagan’s 11th commandment ... it is a monumentally bad idea for conservatives to tear down their own candidates in the primary. Don’t put the well-being of your candidate (Hunter) over the well-being of the cause.

You lost credibility with me some time ago - but this tripe about Cornyn didn’t help matters.

I know John Cornyn relatively well. He led the charge in the Senate to kill the amnesty bill, and he’s been one of the Senate’s most conservative members for quite some time.

You’ve cited a Dallas Morning News hitpiece about the border fence - written in an election campaign where a Democrat, with the help of the Dallas Morning News, is trying desparately to get traction. The Dallas Morning News is a liberal rag. Cornyn is rock-solid on immigration, and is ultimately responsible for the death of the amnesty bill.

You’ve cited an article showing that John Cornyn wants to allow more LEGAL immigration ...

Cornyn: “Letting in more qualified immigrants will help the country combat huge personnel shortages in high tech, engineering, nursing and other fields”

Duh. Conservatism is not anti-immigration. We’re anti-ILLEGAL-immigration. I think bringing qualified, vetted, intelligent immigrants, through controlled legal channels, to contribute to the American economy is a phenomenal idea.

As to the third article ... its the first I’ve heard of it. Doesn’t sound like a great idea ... but, it wouldn’t be the first time a good conservative has had a bad idea (Reagan’s 1980s amnesty, for instance).

I didn’t say Cornyn was Christ-incarnate ... the living model of conservative perfection. I said he was a strong conservative. He’s plenty conservative, and would make a fine running-mate for Fred Thompson.

This is no time for tantrums. Disgruntled Conservatives have already given us Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and we all know how that ended up. I have a friend who was a hostage in Iran for 444 days, if I remember correctly.

This country can’t afford another Clinton who despises the military. I will vote for whomever the Republican candidate is and I hope and pray all Republican adults will do the same.

“Honestly, some Hunterites sound like Paulites.”

So let me get this straight, the theory I see here is that Duncan Hunter is like Ross Perot and will pull votes from Fred allowing Ron Paul or worse Rudi to get the nomination.

Is this the new tactic here? More FUD and name calling about a real conservative candidate that ‘can’t win’.

Thank you! You've just shown your true stripes, it's obvious you are not on the right side. And tripe about cornyn? Did he introduce the bill or not? Need the bill #? Need my glasses? Need a CLUE?

Same ol' nonsense we've seen for the last 6 years trying to excuse the inexcusable in what ever underhanded method they can use and insulting anyone who proves otherwise.

Later, you all.

Can we please stop tearing down both Thompson and Hunter? They are both very fine candidates. The left is already trying to shred our party apart, can we not lend them a helping hand? I think we all feel strongly about each of our candidates so instead of ripping apart the other, why can’t we just list the great qualities of our candidates? This thread makes me feel like I’m reading a DUmmie site (hint hint). Let’s not eat our own please, we are MUCH BETTER than the other side.

“Duncan has no chance, not even with Fred’s help.”

If Fred ends up being the nominee, I’m afraid he’d garner about as much interest from swing voters as Bob Dole did.

>> Thank you!

No problem.

>> You’ve just shown your true stripes, it’s obvious you are not on the right side.

Your insults make little difference to me. You have proven yourself unable to determine what is and is not the “right side”.

You’ve indiscriminately unleashed attacks on any conservative not named “Duncan Hunter”, and proceeded to tear down the very candidates and conservatives that we’ll be relying on in the months and years to come ... long after Duncan Hunter’s campaign has closed shop.

Clearly, you will always put the interests of the Duncan Hunter Presidential Campaign above the interests of the conservative movement generally. You’re an unpaid campaign shill, unwilling to put the interests of the country or conservatism above the personal interests of Duncan Hunter. You’re blind to political realities, and the necessity of name recognition and electability in American electoral politics.

>> And tripe about cornyn? Did he introduce the bill or not? Need the bill #? Need my glasses? Need a CLUE?

Two of the three articles were certainly tripe - as I demonstrated. As for the one that was a legit complaint ... I conceded that that particular bill seemed like a bad idea. I will not, however, concede that a single bad idea necessarily destroys the otherwise stellar conservative credentials of one of our workhorses in the Senate.

Good men sometimes have rotten ideas - this appears to be one of those cases. As I noted, even Reagan - the model of modern conservatism - had some monumentally lousy ideas ... particularly amnesty, and the withdrawal of troops from Beirut after a terrorist attack.

Might I again suggest that you re-read Ronald Reagan’s 11th commandment. When Duncan Hunter’s campaign comes to its inevitable end in a couple of months, conservatism will be much better off if we haven’t ripped to shreds our only hope for stopping Hillary Clinton ... whether that be Thompson, Romney or Giuliani.

Do you not understand/see that the names are being called every time we post any of Fred's records or former remarks? One tells me I have 'no credibility' and then admits what I showed him with links is the truth. How are we to deal with that kind of nonsense, day after day, month after month. It's getting old.

I understand. How about this..... Let’s all start over and we can compare candidate to candidate, 1 issue at a time. For example, just off the top of my head, post 1 candidates voting record next to the other on right to life, then another, etc. One thing I think we will find out is that not ONE of our candidates will be perfect. I just don’t want to feel like we’re “just like THEM” because we’re not, far from it. I expect some heated debate from all this, I just don’t want it to be personal. Any personal attacks we all need to let roll off our shoulder (although you can curse and scream at your monitor, that helps sometimes, lol)!!
