In a speech in Tipton, Iowa yesterday, Senator John Edwards described his health care program
"It requires that everybody be covered. It requires that everybody get preventive care," he told a crowd sitting in lawn chairs in front of the Cedar County Courthouse. "If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK.
***
Edwards said his mandatory health care plan would cover preventive, chronic and long-term health care. The plan would include mental health care as well as dental and vision coverage for all Americans. (Emphasis added throughout)
Of course, as a lawyer, Mr. Edwards would know exactly how to write such a law.

This way John can represent them when they sue the Doctor for institutionalizing them for their insanity

I guess that Edwards thinks that all the people who vote for him are crazy.
That makes it unanimous.

And of course, he really, really wants to make sure that all Americans get mandatory training on proper hair and skin care.

This point was NOT covered in a prior post, which missed the mental evaluation points, buried in the rest of the story!
Every liberal candidate is proposing some sort of “health care” program.
Only Edwards is approach it this way, that’s what makes it news.

The plan would include mental health care as well as dental and vision coverage for all Americans. Strictly speaking, this does not necessarily mean mandatory mental evaluations. It could just mean that mental health is covered, while physical health visits are mandated. Is there anything more specific about Edwards' mandated doctor visits? Has the proposal been written up yet, or is it in the campaign one-liner stage?

Strictly speaking, you’re reading of Edward’s position is wrong.
While YOU made a separation between physical health checks (evaluations) and mental health visits, Mr. Edwards made no such separation.
To Mr. Edwards, it’s all one great big program, an observation which hardly needs further elaboration.

We already know that the mental hospitals etc are part of the hospital system and part of the justice institution along with schools, military barracks, jails, and courts. It doesn’t hurt to remind us, though, since there are always a few here and there who haven’t gotten the word. Doctors are officers of the state.

Apparently (from another thread), by increasing taxes on the top 5% of earners ("tax the rich"). Yes, the usual tripe about reversing "unfair" tax cuts (calling them "welfare for the rich"), making the tax system ever more progressive, etc.
I'd surmise some cuts to DoD spending would be involved as well, with whatever shortfall being gobbled up by the ever-growing public debt. But none of that is important - one feeeeeeeeling good about "doing something".
