Right-Of-Center Bloggers Select The Most & Least Desired 2008 Republican Nominee
Right Wing News ^ | 8/6/07 | John Hawkins

Posted on 08/06/2007 4:09:43 PM PDT by pissant

Right Wing News emailed more than 230 right-of-center bloggers and asked them to send us a ranked list 1-5 of the candidates that they would most like to take the Republican nomination for President in 2008 and the 1-5 candidates they'd least like to see as the Republican nominee in 2008. Representatives from the following 59 blogs responded...

Aaron's CC, The Absurd Report, The American Princess, The Anchoress, Argghhhh!, AtlanticBlog, Atlas Shrugs, The Baseball Crank, Betsy's Page, Bit's Blog, BizzyBlog, Black Velvet Bruce Li, Blogs of War, Blonde Sagacity, Boi From Troy, Conservative Grapevine, dcthornton.com, Dr. Melissa Clouthier, Eckernet, Euphoric Reality, Cassy Fiano, Freeman Hunt, Jeff Gannon - A Voice of the New Media, Ghost of a Flea, GOPUSA Northeast (Hank), GOP Vixen, GraniteGrok, Guardian Watchblog, The Hedgehog Report, Hugh Hewitt, IMAO, Inoperable Terran, Inside Larry's Head, Iowa Voice, Keith Burgess-Jackson, The Jawa Report, Kung Fu Quip, Rachel Lucas, mountaineer musings, Musclehead Revolution, My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, Newmark's Door, Newsbeat1, The Nose On Your Face (Potfry), The Nose On Your Face (Buckley), Pal2pal, Damian Penny, The Pink Flamingo Bar & Grill, PoliPundit (Michael Illions), PoliPundit (Polipundit), Professor Bainbridge, Right Thinking From The Left Coast, Don Singleton, Sister Toldjah, Slobokan's Site Of Schtuff, Solomonia, Don Surber, Viking Pundit, WILLisms

All participating bloggers were provided with the following list of potential candidates although they were also allowed to select nominees who were not listed:

Sam Brownback, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, Fred Thompson, Tommy Thompson

As I mentioned earlier, the bloggers were allowed to make 1-5 ranked selections. Those selections were weighted as follows...

1) Worth 2 points

2 or 3) Worth 1.5 points

4 or 5) Worth 1 point

So, for example, a candidate who received two first place votes (4 points), a third place vote (1.5 points), & and three fifth place votes (3 points), would receive a grand total of 8.5 points.

Also, keep in mind that the scoring cut-off to be included in the lists below was 5 points. If a candidate received less than that, his/her score was not listed. Also keep in mind that not everyone put in 5 selections for each area and there was one first/second place tie, which made the numbers look a bit odd in some places.

Here are the selections that were made with the total number of points each candidate tallied following his/her name in parentheses...

10) Sam Brownback (5)

I don’t understand why Rudy is so high on this. I think it’s more like this for me....

11) Ron Paul

10) John McCain

9) Rudy Giuliani

8) Sam Brownback

7) Tommy Thompson

6) Tom Tancredo

5) Mike Huckabee

4) Mitt Romney

3) Newt Gingrich

2) Duncan Hunter

1) Fred Thompson

But on the other hand, Ron Paul’s position doesn’t suprise me at all.

I am sure the guy in the mirror you look at might buy that but I doubt many freepers here including myself who see you on Paul threads acting like his number one will believe that one.

I am a staunch defender of Paul because I believe his message will help whomever's the GOP nominee overall. The GOP needs his supporters so it's best to court him and give him a tribute or something at the convention.

These are the kind of people who will show up at the primaries, because they have the highest commitment to conservatism.

“What I find interesting is in talking to other conservatives, the ONLY thing I hear negative about Hunter is, yes they love him, but they fear he can’t get elected. It never fails, every single time, I hear that. So I just tell them, if everyone who says that, jumped on board for him, he would!”

Good point!

And I hear the same thing.

A guy who wants to lose to Al Qaida shouldn’t even be let into the convention.

EEE has been active on behalf of Thompson for a long time. It’s possible to be for Thompson and still respect Dr. Paul’s years of defense for the Constitution.

Sean Hannity said today that he thought Romney, Rudy, DUNCAN HUNTER (note my solid cap prejudice :) ), and Huckabee did well in the debate.

A little later a caller to Sean’s show said how he liked Duncan Hunter.

“I am a staunch defender of Paul because I believe his message will help whomever’s the GOP nominee overall.”

Ron holds the GOP’s feet to the fire when it comes to support for constitutionally limited government. He would be more effective if he had a more realistic view of the threat of Islamic fascism. We could use a few more like him. I like him and Tancredo when it comes to moving the overall debate in the direction of Goldwater style support for limited government. Thompson, however, is the one I would like to see actually get the nomination.

Sure looks like Duncan is getting on the map. Just who will the RNC see as the best possible candidate from a sellable standpoint, yet remains to be seen. If things continue to shape up in Iraq and get no worse in Afghanistan, surely it would be a boost for anyone strong on defense.
People will start to take notice of just who is for defending this country. Just because the demorats have a bunch of idiots in office, does not mean all Democratic voters are pleased with how the demwits have been conducting themselves.
Hanoi John had every break in the book, yet in the end GWB stayed in office. Perhaps enough Democrats will see that their front runners are simply not good choices to really defend this country. No one wants another 9/11 accept for the few real basket cases.

They should give Paul a video tribute for his work in limiting government and let him give a speech about it. No, I don't think Paul should talk about Iraq given the circumstances.

Such a move will bring libertarians and other Paul supporters into the GOP coalition.

For me, it’s that I don’t think he’s as media/communications savvy as Fred. He could learn in 8 years as Veep, though.

He has plenty of time, if that is the case, (If) between now and the primary, not to mention between now and Jan ‘09
