Could this be the next Dan Rather type incident?

Over at Captains Quarters, Captain Ed ponders an interesting question brought forth by one of his readers. Apparently, the only evidence of Fred's work at National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association is a copy of the NFPRHA's board minutes from September 14, 1991 that claims that the group had hired Fred.

The big question is, at what point did Fred begin working there? Here's what Captain Ed found.

Now a new bit of indirect evidence has been found. Arent Fox brought Thompson into the firm to be "of counsel" in 1991 for his expertise in their lobbying business, including the representation of foreign governments. Anyone involved in such lobbying has to register with the Foreign Agent Registration Unit at the Department of Justice. Arent Fox filed its registration for its lobbyists, complete with the listings of all its lobbyists -- including their start and termination dates.

Take a look at registrant #2661 in the FARA search system (unfortunately, the results are unlinkable). Fred D. Thompson, according to their records, starts as a lobbyist for foreign business on 10/10/1991 and terminates on 9/17/1993, which is when he decided to run for the remainder of Al Gore's term in the Senate. That gives some indication that Thompson started lobbying for Arent in October and not September of 1991. It's possible that Arent had limited Thompson to lobbying for domestic clients until October, but that seems rather odd, given their desire to have him on board as a major attraction for DC lobbying.

I'd be interested to know when he started lobbying for Arent Fox -- with an exact date. The information on Thompson's association with Arent Fox says that they hired Thompson specifically for lobbying on behalf of foreign customers, which would require the FARA registration with an exact date that such lobbying began. This implies that Thompson wouldn't have been available to the NFPRHA in Septemer 1991, and make the document on which the Times based its entire story somewhat suspect.

Believe me, I’m much more a credit to mine than the group of crotchety, ornery, angry and jealous Duncan Hunter supporters that you follow around defending from Thompson thread to Thompson thread are to yours.

Please, feel free. Drag this out. If you think it helps your cause, I’m game to play along.

You didn’t and I was just messing around with you. Nothing personal against you was meant by what I said.

How can Corallo adamantly deny something that F.T. himself doesn't recall?

Ah hello! Maybe Corallo spoke to Thompson after he had time to make certain?

“Oh the horror. Being a lobbyist is no different than being a lawyer in private practice.”

And we all know how highly regarded lawyers are in the court of public opinion.

We all do need to laugh more. It is difficult with some of the tactics people use around here though.

Let me know when someone takes the time to do an unsubstantiated hit piece on Duncan Hunter and I'll go over to that thread and post:

I’d like to get as much info on this as possible.

What I want is the truth, so I know which VICE PRESIDENT to support for FRED THOMPSON :)

So, in other words, I'd be coming to a thread where someone is already egging people on and throw gasoline on the fire. I'm betting I'd get an even less pleasant reception than I gave to it. At least I made a joke about it.

Question #1: Who put the LASlimes up to this?

Question #2: Where did the fraudulent docs come from?

In any event, it is encouraging to see that the leftists are this afraid of Fred Thompson. As usual, satan always overplays his hand.

“Clinton didn’t enter the race until Oct. 4, 1999.”

You mean Clinton was president since ‘93 and didn’t even enter the race until ‘99?? How did that happen? :)

Nope meant 1991 but you knew that since that is the reference date you made to which I was responding. But then we all aren’t perfect are we?...

Polls aren’t a done deal but cite me one where the GOP candidate has done the comebacks you are referencing regarding the Democrats..... different group and the GOP tends to go with long long term mainstays. Poll are good indicators of where one stands at any one time and to be sucking hind teat isn’t the best place. There isn’t a single digit GOP candidate today that will become the 2008 nominee, imo.

Once I started what I thought was an informative live thread, while Hunter was being interviewed by Sean Hannity, and there were some very nasty remarks, and they weren’t being lighthearted, either.

Actually I think it’s good if we bring attention to the weaknesses and strengths of all the candidates, because the time to find out about each candidate is BEFORE the primaries, AS LONG AS IT’S DONE POLITELY.

If a poster criticizes my guy, I give them the other side, and I consider it a golden opportunity.

“I don’t dislike the guy. At all. I’m skeptical.”

I’m with you. How does an uninspiring, lackluster senator out of office for over four yrs all of a sudden become the star candidate?

That’s why I added the :) to show you I knew it was just a typo. Gotta have some fun.

You know, it’s really way too early to take any polls too seriously.

“As late as MARCH (emphasis mine) of 1980 it wasn’t sure that President Reagan would win the nomination and he was 25 points behind Carter in the national polls. But conservatives kicked up their efforts, won the nomination and won the election in a landslide. We can do it again. It won’t be easy. But it will be well worth the effort.”

From the link: “.. But conservatives kicked up their efforts, ..”

That’s what THIS conservative intends to do.

I already heard some folks at church today 'disappointed to learn that Thompson worked for abortionists...

Which is exactly why the story was published and other papers are picking it up. They want to muddy the waters for Fred, even before he announces his candidacy.

Oh, that's rich. Fred has harnessed the new media like no other GOP candidate.

Duncan Hunter, as good a guy as he is, is still running a campaign from the last century.

Big deal. Thompson registered with this firm. So what?

When the Conservative Scolds for Intellectual Purity come examining Freeper liaisons, will they note that some were registered on DU and/or other sites?

Thompson's credentials and track record count more than this little pimple on a whale's rump.

Unlike DH, JDT has a chance at being elected.

Sad, but true. Watch the future unfold.

Fair enough, but even when it’s polite, when you lend credence to stories that have zero credibility, simply because they’re negative about the guy who’s polling better than your candidate, that’s just intellectual dishonesty of the worst order. You didn’t do that, but other people did.

What you did wasn’t criticism so much as it was a pep talk for the people who are being intellectually dishonest.

That’s my problem with it. You’re obviously not one of the ringleaders here and I apologize if you feel I singled you out unfairly.
