Rudy and Immigration
New York Sun Latest Politics Blog ^ | June 20, 2007 | Ryan Sager

Ramesh makes an excellent point about Rudy and immigration. (It's first-name day here at LP!)

Basically, he (Rudy) has managed to be adamantly opposed to the McCain-Kennedy-Bush-Dobbs (no, sorry, not Dobbs) immigration bill, without drawing attention to the fact that he is extremely pro-immigrant (he was mayor of New York City, for chrissake) and probably even pretty darn pro-legalization.

(How's that for use of parentheses?)

Or, as Ramesh put it:

He could have flip-flopped: But he does not want to get the same reputation as Romney. And he may want to leave open the possibility of pushing for an amnesty as president. Embracing the Senate bill, on the other hand, would have damaged his campaign both by undermining his tough-guy credentials and annoying conservatives.

So he came up with a somewhat technical reason for opposing the bill—he wants better databases. There was no flip-flop. Giuliani has a track record of wanting data on people, after all. But neither did he get associated with an unpopular bill. In the presidential field, all of the conservative outrage at the bill has been directed at John McCain. At the moment, you'd have to say that immigration is helping Giuliani—just because it has caused McCain to tank—even though his position is out of line with most Republican primary voters. That's a neat trick.

Now, I'm not sure this database idea is practical. But it does answer the national security question without at the same time being overly punitive to Mexican immigrants. Of course, if the Lou Dobbs crowd understood this, that's exactly why they'd oppose it.

These elitist so-called "journalists" think that we're stupid and can't figure out what Rudy is about! They still think they can push us to nominate him, so that no matter who wins (Hillary or Rudy) they get what they want: socialism. Sorry, kids, we're not the rubes and boobs you think we are.

This guy is a consummate liar and opportunist. Above all he is a baby killer from hell. Why would we ever want a mayor of anything to run the country defies belief. We don’t elect mayors to run this country. Never haver and never will. Get this bozo off my screen.

It’s shaping up to look like another “vote for the least evil” campaign. I’ll perform as always: vote for the most conservative and have that as a defense during the next cycle of hell whatever winning monster’s tenure unleashes.

Unfortunately our rights and privileges as citizens are being slowly usurped by an elite who sincerely believe we less-connected will continue abiding the abuse. Bad enough that the major parties are indistinguishable at this point - now those parties are fully prepared to deal no matter if the Admin is a liberal Republican or a conservative-seeming Democrat.

This town (D.C.) needs an enema and a thorough investigation unhindered by political clout. The horror...the horror.

The dems have their Slick Willie, I guess ours is now Shady Rudy. I don’t like him at all and will never vote for him for anything. He seems very shady to me. (Just my wise old lady discernment kicking in) Take my advice, don’t trust him and don’t waste your vote on him. Any of the others would be preferable to Rudy.

Giuliani said “If you come here and you work hard and you happen to be in an undocumented status, you’re one of the people who we want in this city.”

NRT!!

How are things going in "the suburbs"?

Missed your witty commentary and absconding with your tag lines. ;)

This town (D.C.) needs an enema and a thorough investigation unhindered by political clout. The horror...the horror.

Does this mean you moved to hell-town central? There are no "burbs" up there ... just layers of purgatory.

Stay safe.
