Ok there, I said it. As far as I know (I mean I have not googled the phrase or anything) I may be the first one to say it publicly and truly mean it. It has a nice ring to it doesn't it? Well... Get used to it.
Think about this for a second. Thompson is going to run, all bulletins point that direction. When he gets in the primary all the polls seem to indicate he will quickly eclipse the Republican field. Like it or not (supporters of other candidates) there was a recent poll that showed that 4 out of ten Republican primary voters just were not happy with the current field. Oh sure they will vote for some of the others in a straw poll, but most readers of NWR understand the difference between deep support and broad shallow support.
Some in the conservative opinion world have attempted to take a mild swipe at Thompson. What happened? Well by golly Thompson swiped back and did so in a thoughtful and witty way. Maggie Gallagher deftly describes the exchange between Thompson and the "fourth wall."

I think he is far better than the rest of the field and could be real good for 2008.
You are way behind. I have already started to work on his re-election campaign in 2012.
if you could take a few minutes a clue me in toward some good investments for 2013 i would be very appreciative.. ;)

So in all seriousness, can anyone disagree with me when I say, let’s start getting used to saying “President Fred Thompson?” I would be interested to hear anyone else give me a reasonable scenario saying otherwise. I mean something beyond the normal moonbattery “he is a Republican therefore he is a criminal” response. And of course the moonbats who have tried to argue on other blogs that Thompson is not a conservative.

Bingo:)
Thanks for the ping!
Delightful to see there are clear thinkers in the lovely Pacific Northwest:)

I just can’t get excited about Thompson. That whole friends with McCain/ instrumental in getting McCain-Feingold passed thing just turns me off. All the frontrunners this year are pretty lame.
ba-da-bing-ba-da-bump!
Worried about the ABC thing he’s doing now - I really don’t think he can afford to do this for months and try and declare in August or something - the money will be gone by then.
In hindsight he admits it was a mistake. Nobody’s perfect but Fred seems pretty close to me.
Neither the Paul Harvey gig nor this political commentary will trigger equal time rules even if he does declare, if they conform to this:
Stations who gave time to candidates on regularly scheduled newscasts, news interviews shows, documentaries (assuming the candidate wasnt the primary focus of the documentary), or on-the-spot news events would not have to offer equal time to other candidates for that office.
Paul Harvey does fall into those guidelines. I dont know the exact details of the commentary spot, but if it is every day, it is probably part of a regular newscast and will not trigger the rule.
Please read the post above yours.
It is an “at will” contract and can be terminated at any time by either party, from what I understand.
But he’s still tight with McCain, so he can’t think it was that big a mistake. Really to me he seems to be McCain without the insanity, which is I suppose better than McCain as is but still notterribly exciting. The whole field is lame though, all the candidates have glaring problems in either their positions or electibility. The Dem field is just as lame, I’m expecting fairly low turnout next year, unless something exciting happens during the campaign the field is a big yawnfest of candidates with problems in their base and in the middle.
So the man can’t have friends?
“During the eight years that Thompson and McCain served together, they cast votes on 102 CQ-defined key votes and agreed on 83 of them or 81.4 percent of the time. They disagreed 18.6% of the time, that’s pretty high considering that both are Republicans and both are considered relatively conservative. Just as an example from one year, among the instances in which Thompson and McCain differed were votes in 2002 to effectively extend a repeal of the estate tax beyond 2010, to authorize oil drilling in Alaskas Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and to postpone tougher automobile fuel efficiency standards. Thompson voted aye and McCain voted no in all three cases.
