An Ultrasound Policy for Abortion
Young Voices Blog ^ | April 12, 2007 | Rose Capozzi

For some women, the biggest decision of their lives may be whether to abort a pregnancy. The physical and mental ramifications of choosing abortion can cause a lifetime of pain, sorrow, and regret. To balance these perceived ills, the South Carolina legislature is considering a bill that would require women to view ultrasounds of their fetuses before making a final decision.

One of the biggest opponents of the measure, Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter (D-SC) told MSNBC, "It suggests that women don't know what they're doing, that they've arrived at this decision quite lightly, and nothing could be further from the truth.”

But what if the woman is not as informed as Cobb-Hunter believes?

Knowing what stage the fetus has matured to might change the mind of a woman seeking an abortion. And if she is already informed of the fetal development and still chooses to carry out the abortion, what harm does the ultrasound do? It does not prevent abortions, it just lets women know what is at stake for their own personal convenience.

I like the idea.

How much does an ultrasound cost these days? Who will pay for it?

Actually, the fact that so many change their minds after viewing the ultrasound proves that many of them DIDN’T really know what they were doing.

***One of the biggest opponents of the measure, Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter (D-SC) told MSNBC, “It suggests that women don’t know what they’re doing, that they’ve arrived at this decision quite lightly, and nothing could be further from the truth.”*** If these women have weighed all aspects and no what they want to do, then it shouldn’t matter to them if an ultrasound is performed. These smart and thoughtful women will take it as one more layer of precaution and carry on with the abortion. Rep. Cobb-Hunter must think women are weak and stupid.

Ultrasounds are expensive and I am not sure who would have been asked to pay for it-— or whether it would have been split between the state and the woman. Lets keep in mind that having an abortion is expensive!

Recently the S.C. senate dropped this part of the bill. Still, it is interesting that they were willing to put it in there in the first place!

Sorry. That's a bull**** law that would allow the State to interfere in a completely legal medical prodecure.

If you want to make abortion illegal, fine. But until then, don't impose simplistic, statist mortalism into a doctor/patient relationship.

Did they drop it? I think it perhaps the state could pay part of it, and the woman can pay for the rest as part of her abortion procedure. There are always precautions taken before surgery and necessary tests done. This would be one of them.

“One of the biggest opponents of the measure, Representative Gilda Cobb-Hunter (D-SC) told MSNBC, “It suggests that women don’t know what they’re doing, that they’ve arrived at this decision quite lightly, and nothing could be further from the truth.””

If only all women could be as “enlightened” as Gilda. Some women have no knowledge of fetal development and buy that “blob of tissue” lie. Later on, they realize they made a huge mistake and killed a child. They are crushed. This could save them from doing that. This could save children when women look at the ultrasound, and they see that their child is a living person.

Used machines are for sale at about the $2500 price point ,, here’s a nice one at $2300 http://cgi.ebay.com/Siemens-Sonoline-SI-250-Ultrasound-w-Probe-Suction_W0QQitemZ300105243842

just for the patients safety an ultrasound exam should be conducted rather than “flying blind” ,, clinics should have such a machine onsite already as they use it to determine billing based on the babies gestational age ,,, sure most clinics are only in it for the $$$ and employ nurses and helpers that can’t get a job in a real medical setting but for $2500 one time plus expendables at about $2 per procedure this is a great idea...
