ISMAIL AK (not AX): Possible lead in Virginia Tech case?
April 17, 2007 | Charles Henrickson

Posted on 04/17/2007 8:28:56 PM PDT by Charles Henrickson

ISMAIL AK

Dr. ISMAIL AK is a Professor of Psychiatry at a university in Turkey. His research interests include the following:

Personal Disorders, Agresivve behavior and self-mutilation, ECT, Substance-related disorders, Sexual Disorders, Forensic Psychiatry, Sleep Disorders

From the Turkish Association of Psychopharmacology website:

President-elect:
Professor Ismail AK, M.D. Head, Department of Psychiatry, KTU School of Medicine, Trabzon, Turkey
Ismail AK is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Head, Department of Psychiatry, KTU School of Medicine, Trabzon, Turkey
He is an experienced on clinical psychopharmacology of schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.

Dr. Ismail Ak is one of the authors of an article about patients with mental disorders, psychotic features, etc.:

As regards pharmacotherapies, 354 (50.2%) were given antidepressants. . . . Among antidepressants, Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were 72.8%. . . .

This is an abstract of an article co-written by Dr. ISMAIL AK:

Even though all psychiatric disorders do not have the same potential with regard to committing a crime, the number of individuals having psychiatric disorders is gradually going up depending on the increase of crimes and violent behaviors committed in a society. . . . The relation between existence of psychiatric disorder and crime behavior has been significantly emphasized in several earlier studies. In conclusion, it is notable that the rates of committing crime for the individuals with psychiatric disorders are on the rise.

Dr. Ismail Ak is apparently one of the world's leading experts on the psychiatry of antisocial and suicidal behavior, psychotic and bipolar disorders, psychopharmacological therapy, etc.

The young man had been noticed to be disturbed and had been referred to counseling. Dr. Ismail Ak is an expert and author in the particular field most directly related to the guy's disorder.

So it's possible that the writing on the guy's arm said

ISMAIL AK

and the K was written in a way that people *thought* it said

ISMAIL AX

That seems more likely to me than a connection to Moby Dick or to Islamic terrorism or to Cooper’s story.

This is an angle the investigators need to pursue with the school's counseling service, the killer's computer, and Dr. Ismail Ak himself.

I just sent an e-mail to Dr. Ismail Ak himself, as follows:

Dear Dr. Ak,

As you know, we here in America have just had a terrible tragedy in which a disturbed young man, Mr. Cho, shot and killed over 30 people, including himself. It has been reported that he had written on his arm the words, ISMAIL AX.

Since you are a leading expert on the subjects of suicidal tendencies, conduct disorders, antisocial behavior, depression, medications, etc.--all issues that affected Cho--I am wondering if he could have come across your name. ISMAIL AK, when written on one's arm, could look like or be misread as ISMAIL AX. Do you know if Cho may have been given your name by someone at Virginia Tech or that he may have known about your name in some other way? Perhaps he was doing his own research (Internet, library) on the issues that troubled him and that was how he came across your name.

On the other hand, there may be no connection at all. Perhaps the mysterious "ISMAIL AX" was not a reference to your name but something entirely different. I just find it coincidental that your name would be so close and that you would be an authority on the very issues that plagued him.

I thank you for your time, Dr. Ak, in reading this message, and if you care to reply I would appreciate it. People here in America are just trying to come up with any possible explanation for the strange details in this tragic case.

I'll let you guys know if I get a reply from Dr. Ak.

Here's a 23-page background (PDF) on the hospital in Turkey where he allegedly works (maybe you've already seen this, not sure).

While we’re on the subject of psychiatrists, I very briefly knew a shrink in La-La Land. Anyway, I once gave him and his son (about 9 years old) a ride. Well, the kid was sitting up front next to me in the passenger’s seat and the shrink was in the back. The kid was sort of harmlessly making a few jokes about his father. Then the shrink asked me to speed up my car a bit which I did. Then he quickly leaned over, and opened the front passenger door and tried to toss his kid out of the car while screaming angrily at him. I immediately hit the brake and sort of went into a state of shock. I mean it was his own son he was trying to toss out of the car and for what? Just for some harmless ribbing. It was then that I realized that many shrinks are probably NUttier than their own patients.

DING! DING! DING! Your Ismail Ak theory has just made the bigtime. Check out the update on this HotAir POST. I would tell you the name of the person who sent this to them but I'm much too (BLUSH!) modest.

In any event, if your Ak theory holds up, it will now be hard to deny who came up with that scoop in the first place.

I don’t do HTML very well, but it would be a good time to insert Bill the Cat saying, “Ack”. We could also have some airplanes flying in formation going through “Ack Ack”. Lotsa freepers know how to do this stuff, so I’ll just leave it to them...

In the February-March 2004 of a journal called DEATH STUDIES, Dr. Ismail Ak was the co-author of an article, "PREDICTORS OF SUICIDAL BEHAVIOR".

The very next article (although not by Ak) in that same issue of DEATH STUDIES was "DEATH ON CAMPUSES".

I kid you not.

OK, this is getting too weird. . . .

Wow! If your Ak theory pans out they can't deny that you were the source of this. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if the MSM denies you as the source thrice before the cock crows.

So maybe Professor Ak is like the Turkish version of Dr. Buddy Rydell.

I'll call this the Ak "hypothesis" rather than "theory." It's at least an angle for the investigators to check out, given the fact that Ak's expertise is in the exact set of disorders that affected Cho.

The biggest difficulties with it are these: 1) Did the writing clearly say "AX" and not "AK"? We don't know. 2) Why would Cho put on his arm the name of a psychiatric expert--even one who wrote on the issues that troubled him? 3) There are other hypotheses worth checking out (Melville, Cooper, Islam, gaming, etc.).

Okay. One last post before hitting the sack. This gunman story reminds me of the time I stopped an armed robbery in Venice, CA without even knowing it. It was late at night. Maybe 2 AM. Well, I pulled into a gas station and walked over to the cashier's booth to pay for my gas. There was another guy there at the booth as well. Anyway, I didn't see the cashier so I got a bit pissed off since I wanted to buy some gas. I asked the other guy what was up and he said he didn't know. Then I saw a gun in the guy's hand and asked if I could take a look. The guy didn't hold it up but I started talking about my friend from years before, Dave Rindone, who was able to strip and assemble a Lugar in just a few minutes. Well, the guy didn't seem too interested in my story but I ploughed on telling him how Rindone showed me how to strip and assemble the Lugar and how I learned to do it right away. Then I asked the guy if he could (I think a lot of caffeine was doing my talking at this point) show me how to strip and assemble his gun. The guy just turned on his heel and angrily took off in his car.

' At that point I turned my attention to the empty cashier's booth again. Suddenly I noticed something on the floor behind the window. The cashier was crouching down. I said to him, "Hey, what are you doing there?"

At first he didn't get up so I continued, "Are you nuts? Why are you crouching down? I need to buy some gas? Get up! Willya?"

Finally the cashier stood up and proceeded to inform me that the guy I was yakking away to was in the middle of an armed robbery when I began talking to him. The cashier had crouched down and below some metal in there so as not to be shot. And idiot me was chatting away with the robber who couldn't believe I was talking his ear off and asking to be shown how to take apart his gun in the middle of a robbery.

Of course, I had absolutely no awareness that there was a robbery going on when while it was attempted.

Thanks for copying me on that post. It is kind of bizarre, but at the same time, that article was published in early 2004 (when the shooter would have been a Sophomore at VT), and likely was written 2002-03 or earlier.

...unless he thought about shooting up the school 2-3 years ago, googled “campus shooting death(s)” and arrived at Ismail Ak and/or the research/work of his colleagues and eventually began corresponding with him.

Just don’t know at this point in time. But let's stay on it, of course.

Melville. They call me Ismael. However, if you see the movie version, Orson Wells did an INCREDIBLE job as the saltwater reverend giving the sermon about Jonah and the Whale? You ever see it? If you actually listen to the sermon, it is very moving. Of course, Wells did an incredible acting job. Maybe the best sermon I ever saw or heard.
