VANITY: Softward for Cleaning Up Margins in Scanned Publications?

Does anyone know a softward solution for cleaning up margins in scanned documents? I just had a local print shop print and bind a small book job. I had scanned the book into a PDF, and there were edges in the margins of the PDF. The job was done on a digital copies (Lanier, I believe it was) that had a button named EdgeErase, which cleaned out the edges and straightened skewed margins.

Is there a softward product that would do this to scanned pages? Acrobat? Another Adobe product? Another company's product?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Adobe Photoshop Elements has commands to automatically crop and de-skew documents.

I don't know about cleaning up margins on a scanned document, but I have another idea that may or may not be an option.

It sounds to me like you have the original text document on your computer because you sent it to someone else to have printed. You could take that text document (Word document?) on your computer and just print it to a PDF file (instead of printing and then scanning back in). I use a free program called PDFCreator.

Or, you could download Open Office (for free). You can save directly to PDF in that.

Depends on how much work you want to do. If you want to scan each page of the document as a graphic instead of a PDF, you can then manually use a standard graphic editing program to manually erase the junk. You then paste the graphic into your new document a page at a time, and save the whole thing as a PDF using a full function office suite such as Open Office.

If it's a large document, however, it probably isn't worth the time that it would take. Your files are probably going to end up being a lot larger as well.

It depends on how much your time is worth and how important a pretty document is.
