Some of you have been emailing me and enjoying my trials as I search for love in Blue Boston. I'm a 42-year-old non-religious Republican, anti-abortion, pro-W, etc. and the pickings are slim. But I managed to meet a fantastic woman, perfect for me in every way--I work in social services and am a fiction writer, and she is into all that stuff, and we just click as I have with no woman since my last relationships broke up.
I just had a discussion with her in which she asked about my politics. I have a No Political Discussions With Liberal Friends policy, and I thought it would suit this relationship. I was right. After I talked a little about my beliefs, she went on a tirade about how Bush caused 9/11, how the WTC was blown up by demolition charges, how Bush is a certifiable moron, and we've killed hundreds of thousands for no good reason, and on and on and on. I sat there, nodding, saying nothing.
This just happened this afternoon, and I'm kinda numb. We have only just started dating but we connect on many levels, but politics is SUCH an important part of my life that this is like a virus introduced into the relationship.
Any comments?
Run Forrest, Run!
Somehow, you have to determine whether or not she has the capacity to see reality.
And I dont mean reality in the sense that she has to agree with your politics.
But man, anyone that TRULY believes that Bush ordered the WTC buildings and the Pentagon demolished is living in a paranoidical nether world of delusion that it's scary.
She might be sweet. She may be enticing.
She might be soft as a mink in springtime and just as horny.
But I would have trouble trusting her capacity to raise children, or for that matter, to do anything of any consequence given that the area of her brain matter that computes logic is obviously discombobulated to the point of fantasy.
Then again, maybe she just hates GWB so bad she "allows" herself to spout off what she knows to be baloney, just to be cool and "with it" amongst her liberal cohorts.
THAT is more likely to be the case. After all, you sound like a reasonable sane person.
And the way you described her did NOT make her sound unstable.
Still, if she swears (even though its wrong to swear) that she REALLY believes that crap, then you have a tough decision to make.
And it depends on whether or not you just want a good lover, or if you plan on marrying and making some children together.
JM2C (just my two cents)
"I work in social services and am a fiction writer"
Sounds like it's time to write another book and forget about this one. I was wondering if this is a real story or just more fiction!
Be a realist and think about this. How can you change her to suit your model citizen... Not gonna happen.
"A hot biker chick--"
That says a lot. I've known a few bikers in my time and I think the conspiracy thing runs quite deep in that crowd. All may not be lost because she obviously gained this knowledge from somewhere and she knows how to listen even though it's kinda wierd that someone wouldn't see the obvious loose ends of some of the theories floating around.
You have a dark side here but I think it can be dealt with. You have your work cut out for you. Try to start by explaining the strategic value of a Democracy in the Middle East to her.
"I mean, she's so hot I keep pinching myself (figuratively) because I can't believe she's fallen so hard for me. Now I see the Dark Side like in all those Deal with the Devil stories."
Well, in that case - do nothing. Maker HER dump YOU if she can't handle your views.
She might be the stalker type if you dump her first.
Speak up next time. If she likes you, she'll listen. If she's rational, she'll respond rationally and the fiction will disappear. If she can't be rational, or refuses, that's bad. Eventually you'll take the place of W and 911 will be your fault, not Bush's.
Ditch her. I tried it once, but discovered that you can't date someone who sides with those who commit treason, terrorism, socialism, etc., plus wanting to strangle your girlfriend for her stupidity is never a turn on.
I traded up to a conservative lady!
Then Plan B:
Leave Boston. At the very least, look to southern New Hampshire to find a girl, the pickin's are better there.
If she believes this run do not walk away. The rest may fall under difference of opinion but in the case of what brought the towers down there is so much factual information out there that only someone who is unhinged could deny the evidence of their eyes and believe something like this.
How old is she?
Five F's?
Food?
Fun?
F...
You are obviously young, or you would know already the Great Secret of Relationships. Namely, your options are two, they are two only, and they are roughly the same as those which eventually confront every man on earth: 1. Have the words "Yes, Dear" tattooed on your forehead and shut up; or, 2. Learn to enjoy solitude. Period. End of story. That's all she wrote. Sorry about that.
ROTFL, that is awesome, thanks for sharing. It's all so clear now, thanks to some dork with a rabbit cage and some damp newspapers.
Nope. I really do like her, and she has a troubled past, and our becoming close is important to her. She had a rough marriage she's now out of, and although I posted here in a kind of lighthearted mood, it really isn't funny when dealing with someone who's screwed up but has many of the qualities I really want in a woman, primarily intelligence (for the most part) and that hardest to find quality--someone who "gets" me. I'm pretty unconventional, and most women are either taken or can't handle one of the things that make me up (either my politics or what I do when I'm not at my fulltime job, which takes up a lot of time.)
I thank you and the other FReepers who gave a pretty overwhelming response here. It's fun to read the funny comments, but in fact, I am starting to get sad. SHe's a very good person, with a great mind, but I don't see how something this important can be just skipped over.
Speaking from experience.
Cut your losses.
Keep her and convert here. She's living in a dark world of ignorance and fear.
