I find it disgusting to think of exempting taxes (school taxes and state taxes) for old people. Just because you dont have kids in school does not mean that you dont benefit from having a good school system. If the school system went to pot and started turning out more dropouts than graduates, you tax free fogies would be crying about the state of affairs and how it sure was better when you were younger.
The Governor has a new item on his Sonny do list. Let the retired folks off the hook for state taxes. Bad idea. Lets look at the reason for wanting this. Is it because the Governor wants to save the masses loads of cash? No. Is it because he has a soft spot in his heart for the poor savers of Georgia? Sort of. Its the same idea that the Democrats have with all of their entitlement programs. VOTE BUYING!
Sonny says that he thinks that the retired have paid enough taxes over their lifetime and deserve a break. Bull. Why does anyone deserve a break? The only people that should be exempt from paying taxes are those who have served their country. Veterans have done something to deserve an exemption. Disabled veterans should want for nothing. They should live like kings on the governments dime.
Old people will read this and say that I am disrespectful of the retired. The answer is that I am not disrespectful but have a different view on this whole retirement thing. Consider this; the social security that you are collecting is paid for by me and the rest of us generation xers that will never see a dime of it. Enjoy. That and all the free drugs that the President wants to dole out. WHY? Because old people vote for those who take care of them. The exact same reason poor and unmotivated people vote democrat.
This is the bottom line (as painful as it is to hear). People (ALL PEOPLE) are responsible for themselves. If you cant make it, welfare is available but its just to keep a roof over your head and food in your stomach. Your retirement is YOUR responsibility. I dont want to hear any more complaining about fixed incomes. Its yours and you have to make due. We all live in this society and we all have to pay for it. If I didnt have to pay your share, I could maybe keep some more of my own money.
Make that 110 -- LOL!
Oh boy, another boomer-bashing thread!! C'mon, whiners, pile it on!! Break out the tissues and fire up the WAAAAAmbulance!!!
Your issue is not with us "Boomers" as much as it is with the "Great Society" proponents that greatly expanded both government and the so-called "entitlement" welfare programs.
Lyndon Johnson (of accursed memory) put Social Security funds into the general budget and indexed payments to inflation instead of making Congress vote for increases. The return on your Social Security contribution is ludicrous. As an example, over the course of my working life my aggregate "contributions" to the fund have exceeded $250K. At even a 6% average investment return on that money, I would have a significant pile of change to retire on.
What needs to be done is an overall true "cut" in all non-defense spending ioncluding Social Security, Medicare, and useless departments of the government, e.g., Education, HUD, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Sallie Mae, Agriculture, etc. etc.
Otherwise we will have much worse problems than a Social Security shortfall.
Make your vote count!
How about a "young working family discount"?
WooHoo! I constantly tell my folks this every time they go somewhere and can't get a discount.
They got to take home so much more of their paychecks than we do. 50 bucks a month goes out of mine for SS. Man, if I could only invest my own way...
answer: Soylent Green ( but not until after I have totally drained SS )
Or it might even the "the Forgotten Generation". I remember thinking my ex-stepdad was a conservative until the 2000 election. When Gore whined, he thought we should just "give the presidency to him". He said it would be better to have a Democrat president, because Bush would cut his social security benefits.
"If the school system went to pot and started turning out more dropouts than graduates, you tax free fogies would be crying about the state of affairs and how it sure was better when you were younger."
Um, hello? I live in Atlanta, we DO turn out more dropouts than graduates, LOL!
Next year I start to collect SS. I would much rather the gov't give me back the $100,000 it has taken from me, consider it a 40yr. interest free loan and I'll not darken it's door again. I've never had children or a mortgage and yet I've subsidised those that do for my entire working life. I still do with my income taxes.
The lazy working-age folks living in government housing with free medical and free cable tv and time to do lots of drugs and commit crime piss me off a lot more than the old folks. At least the old folks only drive slow, not doing drive-by shootings, usually.
And while we're at it, how about paying me back for the two years I was forced to spend in the military?

Take this brown nugget of socialistic drivel for instance. The author claims that those without children in school benefit from having their assets seized to pay bureaucrats who may or may not instill any learning in someone else's children. Totally illogical of course. IF education has a value, then the one receiving it should be the one who pays, and since children have few assets their parents should pay the whole freight.
If the school system went to pot and started turning out more dropouts than graduates, you tax free fogies would be crying about the state of affairs and how it sure was better when you were younger.
Actually no one would give a flying f... except the bureaucrats. The dropouts don't care; their parents don't care. WTF. The world need ditchdiggers too.

The envious a$$hole who wrote this is part of the reason that taxes just keep going up. He compares Mark Taylor's giving away tax dollars to insure what are basically illegal immigrants ninos to a tax cut. This is how liberals and Democrats think. A tax cut is only a give away in your mind if all resources belong to the government.
Sonny says that he thinks that the retired have paid enough taxes over their lifetime and deserve a break. Bull. Why does anyone deserve a break?
Because taxation for wealth redistribution is armed robbery pure and simple. Personally I think the coward who anonomously wrote this piece of dog squeeze should pay 100% of his income for taxes since he thinks taxes are so great.
The writer would have been set outside at age one day to die of exposure or be eaten by squirrels if this were not a progressive age.
"I'm Old. Gimme, Gimme, Gimme!!"
Better yet, just get rid of discounts for certain groups entirely. Obviously it is the choice of the business owner, but why should the exact same item cost more for some folks than for others?
Maybe if you loved people more than money..............
You mean like getting rid of "children stay for free" at motels and "children under 12 admitted free" type things? The ugly class hatred for old folks by the posters on this thread makes me think I'm on DU. Discounts like this are offered by BUSINESSES. If you don't like their policy go somewhere else. These are totally different than TAXES which the last time I looked were mandatory, and if you didn't like them you couldn't go somewhere else.

I especially agree with this, as well as the rest of your post. I don't think exempting any family without children from school taxes is a bad thing, of course I would require that in the same legislation the families with children would be free to spend their dollars where the best educational value is. (More freedom for them than "vouchers.")
The only problem I have with the older generation of today is that they were instrumental, as well as the socialist Dems, in stopping any fundamental change to SS. I would have loved to start down the path to solving that problem....
I have to agree - A lot of them ARE democrats. One thing the author of this skid mark ignores is the fact that the parents of school age chillin get a fat tax break on their income taxes in exempting income for each chile. I notice he doesn't call for the elimination of that.
True. Many of these reasons are why I support the FairTax legislation. I prefer to have everyone well aware of the burden that government imposes on society, with not a bit of value added benefit to society.
