I find it disgusting to think of exempting taxes (school taxes and state taxes) for old people. Just because you dont have kids in school does not mean that you dont benefit from having a good school system. If the school system went to pot and started turning out more dropouts than graduates, you tax free fogies would be crying about the state of affairs and how it sure was better when you were younger.
The Governor has a new item on his Sonny do list. Let the retired folks off the hook for state taxes. Bad idea. Lets look at the reason for wanting this. Is it because the Governor wants to save the masses loads of cash? No. Is it because he has a soft spot in his heart for the poor savers of Georgia? Sort of. Its the same idea that the Democrats have with all of their entitlement programs. VOTE BUYING!
Sonny says that he thinks that the retired have paid enough taxes over their lifetime and deserve a break. Bull. Why does anyone deserve a break? The only people that should be exempt from paying taxes are those who have served their country. Veterans have done something to deserve an exemption. Disabled veterans should want for nothing. They should live like kings on the governments dime.
Old people will read this and say that I am disrespectful of the retired. The answer is that I am not disrespectful but have a different view on this whole retirement thing. Consider this; the social security that you are collecting is paid for by me and the rest of us generation xers that will never see a dime of it. Enjoy. That and all the free drugs that the President wants to dole out. WHY? Because old people vote for those who take care of them. The exact same reason poor and unmotivated people vote democrat.
This is the bottom line (as painful as it is to hear). People (ALL PEOPLE) are responsible for themselves. If you cant make it, welfare is available but its just to keep a roof over your head and food in your stomach. Your retirement is YOUR responsibility. I dont want to hear any more complaining about fixed incomes. Its yours and you have to make due. We all live in this society and we all have to pay for it. If I didnt have to pay your share, I could maybe keep some more of my own money.
Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effects Generation Reagan / Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations (i.e. The Baby Boomers) are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.
Freep mail me to be added or dropped. See my home page for details and previous articles.
It's going to get worse.
Mr. Scrooge, can I throw one more piece of coal in the stove?
We need nationwide vouchers.
Dismantle the government-teachers union complex!!!
The NEA monopoly makes Microsoft look like a kindergarten!
Ya but--the oldsters are supporting, through property taxes,
ever increasing municipal budgets. In my town we recently had a 7% tax increase which the old timers generally opposed. They don't have kids in school, and use less town services than us younger folks. If it weren't for the oldsters the tax increase would have been more...
A good point, badly made.
When my mom had hip replacement surgery I found out how much medicare really does pay for. It was the last time I felt sorry for elderly not being able to afford meds. Considering they have contributed very little to MY soc.sec account they should pay up.
EVERYONE is on a fixed income!
And another thing, it's really a matter of better management of resources. The schools and municipal govt would like nothing better than ever increasing budgets.
That's where I quit reading. If you think we have "a good school system" I'm afraid that the rest of your logic is flawed.
I hope you live to be 100.
Catering to 'seniors' is so PC now. The assumption is that all are on fixed incomes, eating Alpo. Nothing infuriates me more than seeing a retired couple drive up to a fast food joint in a Lexus and get the "senior discount". How about a "young working family discount"?
"Let the retired folks off the hook for state taxes."
Why not let ALL Georgians off the hook for state taxes?
"Old people" are the wealthiest segment of society. They have accumulated millions over their lifetime. I should not be subsidizing their retirement. There is no such thing as a "fixed income". Nothing prevents anyone from getting another job. I don't have kids in school either but don't mind paying. If the schools were crap in Loudoun County VA, then property values would plummet and I would still lose.
Good grief. Generation-X and Y's household net worth (that's assets less debt) is growing five times faster than the national debt. Yes, the government spends too much but would you rather have the government borrow that money at 5% or take more of your money that you could be earning 10% with?
If you're referring to these demographic groups as "Generation Reagan" you should be aware that the national debt, as a percent of GDP, isn't all that much different today that it was under Reagan.
I don't want to hear another complaint. EVERYONE knows what the score is on Medicare and social security. Start saving people. There are EXCELLENT vehicles to do so. Even if you can't put much in now, save what you can every payday and secure your future.
Well, the theory is
old folks are wise and pass on
wisdom to the young.
The reality
is that old folks are just old
versions of the young
idiots and scum
wrecking what's left of the world.
My impression is
seniors use so much
health-related resources
that more than eats up
whatever savings
they might deliver elsewhere.
But what is the point
of getting worked up?
We're not Nazis. We will care
for those who need care.
