I was watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" yesterday and it struck me that on that show (as well as many, many others) they spend a lot of time talking about High School and even Elementary School.

Is this "normal?" I had a pretty crappy time of it in school -- I as the little guy that they all beat up on. But except when it is pointed out, specfic events in my child life have zero direct influence on my life. I barely even remember people from then, much less events.

Do people older than 20 really sit around and talk and think about their school days?

I was a natural target due to my interest in science and history over sports etc. However, the years passed and everybody grew up, the bullies and nerds found common ground. These days, some of my former bullies are good friends. It's called adulthood and it's an equalizer.

I was looking at my senior book a few years ago and I was shocked to realize that I didn't have the vaguest memories of doing some of these things my friends wrote about. It sure sounded like we had a blast. I just don't remember it. (I didn't drink or do drugs, so I don't have that as an excuse.)

Great post.

My grade and high school days were OK - I had my fights and squabbles and my share of good times too, but I never find myself brooding over the bad experiences or in a nostalgic reverie over the good ones.

Some people really do seem to believe that their high school days were the best days of their lives and that everything has been all downhill since, or that their high school days crippled their spirit and scarred them forever.

I enjoy being a grownup and dealing with the here and now. The past is the past and it holds no compelling interest for me in the present.

Well, you gotta tell that to the almost 3m St. Louisans, since in this town, the first question you're asked by a person you just met is "Where did you go to high school?"
