...Recently, a couple of our close male friends told us about their experiences with the other major category of online dating scam---the Russian would-be oh-so-loving and devoted girlfriend scam. This one is nearly ubiquitous across the net. Apparently, there's something in the water in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine that produces blond women of surpassing devotion, all of whom are eager to stand by their man... and pretty much any American man will do. Their real goals differ from woman to woman, but there are a few broad categories:
--I want to escape my crappy former Soviet Republic, even if it means marrying a man I've never met.
--I want to escape my crappy former Soviet Republic, even if it means marrying a man I've never met... and the chances are quite good that after I've been there for three years, I'm leaving that man and taking half his stuff.
--I want to escape my crappy former Soviet Republic, and I'm going to pretend that I want to marry a man that I've never met. Once he arranges for my visa, I'm going to come to America, marry him, and start a joint bank account. Then, I'm going to wire money to my Russian mafia boyfriend, who's going to fly to America, kill my American pig husband, and then we'll both enjoy spending all his American pig money together.
With so much at stake, you'd think these scammers would want to proceed using the same realistic techniques that I found so convincing in the story I described above about Ms. Plausible. However, I suspect that they discovered...

Well yes, that IS the Russian male-order bride you ordered.
Now, jest which Rushin' mail-order bride did you receive?
Leo Frankowski - Author of the Conrad Stargard series recently went through this process, and ended up marrying a Russian gal.
He's currently living in Russia, and building himself a castle to live in.
I had some fun reading his blogs on the subject.

His wife recently started yet-another Russian singles dating web site. Not sure how it compares to others, but all things considered - it is kind of interesting that there are a number of American men looking for wives abroad.
Glad to know that some are on the up and up. Actually, I dated a Russian girl while I was in Russia, and Tver was her hometown---so, I have been all over the city that Frankowski now calls home. (I think my Russian girl was on the up and up too. : )
I wish Frankowski and his bride well!
Yes, I can see why you might feel that way.
Thanks okay, that wasn't the stamp I was licking.
LOL, I wasn't going to go that far...
There is a scam I would fall for.
I guess we know who dodged a bullet. :)
Thanks for making my choke on my coffee. LOL.
Actually, the scam tried on me was to get me to wire the money and then not come. I discussed the issue with an immigration attorney before I did anything (other than answer the e-mails) and he told me it was a scam.
I found that the women (actually I had no way of confirming that the person in the photo attachments matched the person who was sending the e-mails) did answer my questions, but I tried to get them to write me something in Russian besides "do svidaniya" (I even sent one a cyrillic font) and for some strange reason, they didn't. ;)
Ping!
