Tweety is the poster-child for violent crime in Spain – a different image from the smiling, and laughing young man seen on the home-videos in my family’s personal collection.

His name was Luis Samuel, but when he was younger friends called him Piolin, Spanish for “Tweety Bird.” He immigrated to Spain from Peru a decade ago but he died Monday in Madrid, Spain with an off-duty policeman’s bullet in his brain. He was 29.

My wife read about it in a Spanish newspaper where we live before receiving a telephone call from Piolin’s godfather – who is also the godfather of one of our daughters. Then she told me.

Piolin held up an off-duty policeman outside of a bank in the Madrid suburbs, and then brutally stabbed him with an ice-pick as his two accomplices shouted “kill him, kill him!”

In the midst of the barrage of stabs, and in self-defense, the policeman was able to loosen his own private handgun. The warning shots didn’t stop Piolin’s attack, but one close-range shot did. The policeman had no choice.

The two accomplices got away with 24,000 euros, leaving Piolin dead and the policeman agonizing on the ground from multiple stab wounds.
