In a recent poll, the average "informed" Democrat voter identified the "electoral college" as:

1) A 2-year school all prospective power company employees must attend

2) The name of the latest rock band profiled in Rolling Stone

3) The NCAA men’s basketball tournament selection committee

4) The most common advice given to aspiring dentists

5) Bill Clinton’s advice to female interns

Snopes.com has this (from www.snopes.com/glurge/lincoln.htm):

1840: Sought to become elector - defeated.

This statement is simply wrong. Lincoln was named as a presidential elector at the Illinois state Whig convention on 8 October 1839, and he campaigned as a Whig elector during the 1840, 1844, 1852, and 1856 presidential elections (skipping the 1848 campaign because he was serving in Congress).

I pointed out to snopes.com that the Democrats carried Illinois in 1840, and thus indeed Lincoln was defeated for elector in 1840. They responded that I was wrong, that anyone nominated for elector was an elector.
