"There's a Woman In There"

The Anchoress has some fantastic coverage of the Democratic reaction at the Coretta Scott King Memorial Service. She just utterly eviscerates the left for its bad conduct during the Memorial Service and makes some fantastic points. On the left, Pam Spaulding clearly Doesn't get it

I think the short version is that its about class. Death is the common event that happens to everyone regardless of race, religion, or politics. We all die. Our time on this Earth comes to an end. The argument has been made that with four former Presidents on the stage, that politics couldn't be avoided.

Nonsense! I remember the Nixon Funeral. You had four presidents there (Ford, Carter, Reagan, GHW Bush, and Clinton.) and it was dignified, it was graceful, and it was decent.

We come together as a nation, not because we want to lash out at the current leadership. We come toegether to mourn, to remember the dead with dignity and respect. We mourn as a nation for great people, because its a reminder that greatness gives no immunity to death. We must all take that journey to what Hamlet called "The Undiscovered Country."

Ex-Presidents are respectful at the funerals of bitter rivals, because they know that their funeral could be next. The Current President attends funerals such as these to show the solidarity of the American people with the family of the deceased. In a way, attacking a President whose acting in such a non-partisan manner is an affront to the dignity of the American people.

What's happened is that not even death can be apolitical for American liberals. President Clinton said something truly important when he said, "I don't want us to forget, there's a woman in there."

He hit on something truly illuminating. Today, with the controversy over what Jimmy Carter said, and over what Reverend Lowery said, we forgot the fact that this speechifying occured with the dead body of a woman lying nearby.

As Kate O'Beire pointed out on Hardball (video: Expose the Left), the coverage is focused on what a few ill-mannered loud mouths said, not the woman in the casket, who after a life of dignity, served as a prop for political hacks to get in their digs and politicians to promote themselves.

Yes, Mr. President, there's a woman in there, who like us all got it right sometimes and got it wrong at others. There was a woman in there who spoke with courage and stood up for what she believed.

Americans tuned into watch and Presidents came to say goodbye to someone who meant much to our country. Millions tuned into remember a great family and a great woman. They wanted to hear words that spoke not to partisan feelings, nor cheapshots. They wanted to see our nation come together to honor a great woman's passing, to mourn the end of an era.

Instead, we got a classless, graceless performance in which a sitting President who came to share the condolence of the American people was attacked in the most cowardly way possible, at a time when he could not defend himself.

The American people don't like classlessness and petty politics and for turning a dead woman into a political prop, Democrats will pay a price.

Democrat: "Hello nice black people. Do you mind if we use you as a prop so that we can get some political mileage? Thanks a bunch."

Thanks for posting this. I wouldn't say that some politicians and activists need a little class, I would say that they need super tankers full of the stuff.

So many of the speechmakers stressed Coretta's preference for nonviolent methods when pushing for change.

It's time to recognize the contribution by American soldiers and President Eisenhower to the cause of civil rights.

Telegram from parents of Little Rock students to President Eisenhower, thanking him for sending 101st to protect kids , September 30, 1957 [excerpts]

We the parents of nine Negro children enrolled at Little Rock Central High School want you to know that your action in safe guarding their rights have strengthened our faith in democracy.

Now as never before we have an abiding felling of belonging and purposefulness...We believe that freedom and equality with which all men are endowed at birth can be maintained only through freedom and equality of opportunity for self development growth and purposeful citizenship.....You have demonstrated admirably to us the nation and the world how profoundly you believe in this concept

For this we are deeply grateful and respectfully extend to you our heartfelt and lasting thanks
