I watched a documentary last summer about the loss of jobs in America. Small, middle class towns formerly supported by jobs in maufacturing (such as Thompson TVs, Rubbermaid, RCA, etc) are dead and defunct because the plants closed. Can you guess why? The Trade Agreement with China (thanks Willie!). Here are a few interesting facts:
Wal-Mart is the largest corporation in the world. Dell+IBM+GM+GE+Microsoft+HP = Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart buys its product from 6,000 suppliers. Wal-Mart built its gargantuan buying headquarters in China, because 80% of those suppliers are in China. They buy finished products in China (where the factory workers are paid $25-50/month) and then RETAIL them for LESS than what it costs American manufacturers to make them.

I do hate WalMart. Only been in one ~once~.
The rust belt is dying, while the NW, interior west and southeast thrive. Home ownership is at an all time high and more Americans are invested in the stock market than ever before.
Another thing this moron misses is the fact that factory workers in this country got paid sh-t wages until the end of World War II, when Europe was destroyed, Asia was still underdeveloped and the American worker (and their unions) had no competition. The age of the "middle class factory worker" only lasted from 1945-1972 and was only in certain (Democratic!) regions of the country.
If any of you "populists" are interested, I can take you on a tour of where my "factory worker" grandfather raised three kids in Jersey City. Not nearly as nice as the neighborhoods his kids live in now. Even the illegals live in better housing than the urban proletariat did in the glory days of "smokestack America."
You don't like Wal Mart? Shop at Target!
Good comment, pal. :)
It's a blog, so you can go there and let her know what you think. ;)
Where did you find this? A friend of yours?
Done. Can't wait 'till the Pitchfork Brigade sees my comments.
I've never heard of this particular blog before. I found the link to it on another blog.
I thought it was disturbing and wanted to get a variety of opinions on it. I don't always agree with the articles I post. My goal is to find something that will interest people.
I do shop at Wal-Mart now and then, BTW.
This guy doesnt really have his facts straight....television production was moved to Mexico, not China. (We are talking about the regular 27 inch TVs, not plasma or LCD)
Nearly every home appliance is built down there, not China. (Except Hanjin)
Agreed, but we have to put pressure on our candidates to make it so!
Clemenza, you're making some good points over there on that blog.
I didn't see where the author said that TV products were moved to China. Where did you read that?
I disagree with you, Evening Star. I don't think Clemenza points were on-topic or relevant.
Did you guys read the whole article all the way through to the end?
Disagreement is OK. ;)
Everyone had it tough in those days. Ever have to eat a Slinky(TM)?
