What is the best weapon for my wife?
Me | 9/4/2005 | Me

Posted on 09/04/2005 7:46:39 PM PDT by Shazbot29

My wife, after years (since marriage) of not wanting guns in the house saw what happened in NO and realized that some people beome barbarians at the drop of a hat. We are in earthquake country and she now knows she needs to be armed (as should I).

She is very slight and tiny, so she needs maximum blasting power with minimum recoil. And I don't have a lot of money to spend.

The good news is that my wife understands the statement I taught her: Never point a weapon at anything you don't want to kill and always kill what you point our weapon at.

I assure you, she is almost Heinleinian -- say prayers for anyone who comes into her gunsight after I get one for her.

Actually, only the 357 if she can handle it. 38 would be better if she can't.

Thanks Mrs. P.

Reports from the field are the best.

A 410 shotgun can work too! There are several models available. My wife has one for when I am not around.

Lock 'em, and load 'em.

"She is very slight and tiny"

Please be more specific.

5 feet nuthin -- 100 lbs soaking wet. But she is a semi-professional dancer so she has leg and arm muscles like ropes.

I have found that a .357 has just as much, if not more, recoil than my .45. The .45 doesn't have that upward kick that you get with a revolver since the slide absorbs the recoil. If going with a revolver, I think the a .38 is probably the better choice than a .357

A .38 caliber revolver would be good. Easy to load and fire.

I say .38 because it has little recoil but can put a thug down.

For non-gun people this is perhaps the best kind of handgun.

I'd go with a "Saturday Night Special" .38 revolver for her and a 12 Ga. shotgun for you.

Academy Sports has a Mossberg Maverick 88 Defender model for $147. I picked up the 12 guage and fitted it with a pistol grip and heat shield. It holds 5 &1. Looks exactly like and accepts aftermarket parts for the Mossberg 500. It comes with an 18.5 barrel instead of the 20 inch on the 500 Persuader moss.. similar to this 7&1 8 shot version. Mine is just shorter. I love shooting it..

Don't kill her!

After I reread my headline, I LOLd!!!!!

Of all places, FR is the WRONG place to leave an ambiguous statement! ;)

If she's got the arm muscle built up as you say...she'll be able to handle pretty much anything! Just make sure the two of you take lessons in safety, cleaning, ... stuff.

And practise, practise, PRACTISE.

I agree with Travis...357...

And DON'T get a small cute gun. Get something with ooomph!

What you just did should be fine.

I am glad that we could help. A friend of mine recently purchased a pistol and a shotgun for home defense for his wife and himself.
