If it's one thing that hard-line Muslim fanatics respect, it's internet petitions.

This is despicable, but I don't think they will listen.

Just out of curiosity... has anything positive ever come about as a result of an internet petition?

I know. I can't help but think of what the Taliban did to the Buddhist statues in Afghanistan. It still brings tears to my eyes that such artifacts were destroyed.
On the bright side tho' maybe Iran will see this as a magnanimous gesture worthy of a legitimate, modern, and sovereign state? No? We could only hope.

Its purpose is to inform public and let those influential people know that public opinion is against such acts.

All the more power to you... though it always seems like 'those influential people' don't really care what us anonymous cyber-space dwellers think enough to change their minds. People are stubborn.

I Signed! I pray that it does some good. As you said though, we need to get the word out. There are only a little over 200 signatures.

This is being sent to the U.N. because this ancient site is a UNESCO Heritage site. They SHOULD protect it. (granted, I know it's the UN) But it's worth everyone's signature if only to try to shame the U.N. into doing something to save it.

I'm not a geologist nor archaeologist, but would tend to wonder if submerging such things might render them "invisible" to further efforts at eradication?

Why would the Mullah's be so short sighted? Or is that like asking why is water wet?

I signed.
The Mullahs must particularly hate Cyrus the Great for rebuilding Jerusalem for the Jews.
