When Joe Kennedy starts running those inspid Citizens Energy ads in a few weeks, just remember these two words:
Pam Kelley.
Oh yeah, he's a great humanitarian, Joe is. At least as long as the cameras are rolling. But Joe forgets that charity begins at home, because when he had a chance to walk the walk, as opposed to talking the talk, he walked . . . away.
That's one thing Pam Kelley can't do – walk. Because 32 years ago, driving like a madman over sand on Nantucket, Joe Kennedy flipped a Jeep and put her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Now he just wishes she'd go away. He tells her he is ``broke.'' He has trust funds, and a job with a ``nonprofit'' that pays him hundreds of thousands, and he tells his victim that he's destitute, that he has to pay, of all things, child support.
``Broke?'' she says. ``You know, I've been going to my family for the last 30 years, it's time for him to go to his family.''
Good luck with that, Pam. But then, she already has a pretty good idea what the Kennedys are all about. ``The Kennedys are cheap, self-centered people,'' she says. ``Out of one side of his mouth, he's saying, `I'll do anything for you.' And the other side of the mouth is saying, `I'm broke.' ''
Kelley was crippled at age 18 on Nantucket in the summer of 1973, four years after Uncle Ted's great adventure on Martha's Vineyard, 18 years before Willie and Ted's ``traditional'' Easter at Au Bar.
Pam Kelley was just another in a long line of disposable females, from Gloria Swanson to Joan Bennett Kennedy. Pam had been dating David Kennedy, another of Robert's doomed sons. When they spoke in 1983, David was, as always, stoned out of his mind.
``He told me he wanted what I had, which was sobriety,'' she said. ``Then he said he wanted to walk down the beach with me again, like he forgot what had happened to me.''
A few months later he was dead of an overdose in Palm Beach.
In 1973, newly crippled for life, she didn't want to sue the Kennedys. They were family friends. ``I was 18, and my father's sitting by my hospital bed asking me what do I want to do, and all I can see is that wheelchair next to the bed.
After legal fees, Kelley ended up with $600,000 from the automobile insurance company. It's gone now. She works, but it gets harder and harder. She began calling Joe a few years ago.
``He's given me maybe $50,000,'' she says. ``Mind you, though – it was not without begging and not hearing from him. It was just so demeaning.''
A couple of years ago, a reporter called her. She said, ``No comment,'' and Joe read it in the paper.
``He sent me a check for $10,000, and a note saying, `Thanks for being such a good friend – hope this helps.' ''
Now Kelley's 50, and her working days are numbered. She had to have work done on her house.
``I want to pay off my mortgage – $128,000 – and the home equity loan I had to take out after he didn't help me. That's another $25,000. And I'd like to pay off my car loan – $15,000. And I would like a steady income to go with my disability after I have to stop working.''
Her brother suggests $100,000 a year would seem appropriate.
``I've always lived hand-to-mouth, and that's not a problem. I just want to be able to go to bed at night without worrying,'' she said.
If you could talk to Joe, what would you tell him, Pam?
``I'd say, `Bleep you, you and your three houses.' Broke? I'd say, `Why won't you help me? How can you just bullbleep me like that?' It's not like he's never seen me in a wheelchair.''
Think of Pam Kelley this way: she's the Mary Jo Kopechne who got away.

I'd like to pay off my mortgage and car loan, and I'd love a steady income after I stop working. That makes me the same as exactly everyone else, I'd imagine.I can empathize with this lady, but she was awarded $600K in the early '70s and elected not to sue for damages because she was star-struck by the Kennedy family. I am no Kennedy apologist, but I'm going to have to side with Joe on this one. I don't think he "owes" her anything other than what he's already given her.
The Kennedys are scum, but Joe is really at the bottom of the barrel. Not only is he amoral, he is dumb as a fencepost. He was pathetic as a Congressman. If he is broke, it's because he is too stupid to earn a living doing anything on his own.
