Semi-News: Armstrong Speaks Out on Iraq War
Az Conservative ^ | Aug 13, 2005 | John Semmens

Posted on 08/13/2005 8:52:13 PM PDT by John Semmens

Lance Armstrong, seven-time winner of the Tour de France bicycle race, was quoted as decrying funding for Operation Iraqi Freedom, saying the money would be better spent on his “bicycles for peace” initiative. The quote has been posted on the website of Code Pink, an antiwar organization.

“If the Iraqi insurgents had bicycles they wouldn’t be so hostile,” said Armstrong. “Cycling would give them a wholesome and healthy outlet for their energy. Look what it’s done for me!”

The Armstrong posting is part of Code Pink’s “One Million Reasons,” an online petition drive asking people to state their reasons for opposing the war in Iraq. The petition is expected to be ignored by President Bush sometime in September.

Does the left's drivel and sloganeering really affect anyone that's not already converted and in their choir?

Are they winning the PR battle?

Can the right and conservatives do better? Do we take it (the PR and advertising gabmits) seriously enough?

On the contrary, I think President Bush has already started to ignore the petition.

Oh, I get it. Winning a bicycle race turns one into an expert on world affairs, as well as a military strategist. Golly, I wasted all those years in grad school! I could have learned it all just by riding a bike!

Spin that wheel.
I'm stacking my chips on the square labelled "parody".

You oughta write for Limbaugh. His recent spoofs
have hooked a lot of fish that didn't closely
examine the bait.

Great Moments in Cycling History

Never trust anyone who has cycled under 30 miles.

Armstrong is from Travis County, one of a handful of Texas counties to voted for Waziizname.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Armstrong's girl friend is some Bush-bashing America-hating moonbat entertainer. He's obviously slugged down some kool-aid while riding his bike.

Well, he also left his wife and kids for that breast deficient liberal idiot Sheryl Crow, so expect nothing less from him.

Exactly.

He can't be that much of a simpleton.

Good Lord.

OK let's try this again.

CODE PINK is using Armstrong's image and statement without his permission.

And, he is an activist for more funding for cancer research - not for some bicycle initiative.

He was just on Stephanopolous show on ABC, and

a) President Bush just reappointed him to the President's Cancer Panel and
b) He's going mountain bike riding with Bush next Saturday.

If he was really an anti-war activist, and a tool of the Democrats do you think Bush would be doing either of those???

Code Pink is despicable. I wish Armstrong would sue them to pull down his name, picture, and quotes - but it would probably just get them lots of publicity.

John, you wrote: "Lance Armstrong, seven-time winner of the Tour de France bicycle race, was quoted as decrying funding for Operation Iraqi Freedom, saying the money would be better spent on his “bicycles for peace” initiative. The quote has been posted on the website of Code Pink, an antiwar organization. “If the Iraqi insurgents had bicycles they wouldn’t be so hostile,” said Armstrong. “Cycling would give them a wholesome and healthy outlet for their energy. Look what it’s done for me!” I challenge you to show me the link to those quotes. I went to Code Pink because I was shocked he would say something like that. It isn't anywhere on their site. I think you made it up. Lance Armstrong is a cancer activist. He doesn't have some "bicycles for peace" initiative. His quotes were in USA Today, and Code Pink has taken his words out of context and twisted them to their own purposes. I don't like his statement on the war, but that doesn't make it right for you to just make stuff up.

Didn't John Kerry encourage him to run for Congress? Wasn't he worried that Armstrong would run "on the other side" as a Republican? Something doesn't make sense here.

Yes, maybe, but I just saw Armstrong being interviewed by George Stephanopolous (?) and he said something like that maybe some of the money spent for the Iraq war should go for other things. Then he sorta pleaded for more government money to go for the "other things" what ever that or those are. Perhaps he feels like there was an inexhaustable supply of "government" money.

As if it were not the citizens supplied tax money.

Perhaps you're right, I'm naive or not sharp enough sometimes, but I wasn't that far off.

To be honest, I don't know, nor do I care, about Armstrong's politics. That's been argued to death before, and I'm not interested in it.

Point is, the article is satire, even if Armstrong is opposed to the Iraq invasion. "Fake but accurate" may apply here.

You do realize this is not true, right?

And why, oh why do people keep prattling on about him "leaving his wife and kids for that uber-lib skank"?

It gets old, and it's not true. Geesh. At least you didn't say "his wife who supported him when he had cancer."
