Mr. Subliminal Returns! Franken Borrows From Nealon's SNL Act
The Radio Equalizer- Brian Maloney ^ | August 10th, 2005 | Brian Maloney

Remember Kevin Nealon's classic Saturday Night Live "Mr. Subliminal" character?

He could slip a critical point into the smallest spaces, creating some of the show's funniest moments.

After a detailed analysis of Al Franken's recent public Air America scandal comments, it's clear he may owe Nealon one, for stealing his act.

That's because slipped into Franken's rambling set of excuses over why he and Air America are not responsible for $875,000 in taxpayer funds, diverted from a Bronx-based community center, a key admission is made.

Take a look at this snippet, with a full Radio Equalizer-produced transcript below, (bold emphasis mine):

Franken admitted to getting paid for at least 3 weeks during the start-up of Air America which would have come from the kid's money.

He should, at least, REPAY that 3 weeks of salary to Gloria Wise that he has admitted to getting.

Let's use that one against him.

Are they still on the air?

In the same way that Pierre Jennings is still on the air...

The key new material here is:

1. Maloney has a complete transcript of this broadcast.
We've only seen snippets until now.

2. Franken appears to admit that he suspects some of
the money was used for Air Enron operations (which
might include his salary).

3. Air Enron doesn't have $875K to escrow while the
loan gets unwound.

The question should not be "Are they still on the air??" It should be "WHY ARE THEY STILL ON !!" This program is broadcast everynight on the Robert Redford Sundance channel 540 on Direct TV. It is insipid and totally unwatchable. If you run through and take a looksee, you will turn it off in anger.

It is insipid and totally unwatchable

There's a little station just outside of Portland, Maine that carries it, but the signal is so weak it usually fades out. I thought I would try to listen to it to see what it is about, or for some laughs. I caught Randy Rhodes the other day, and it was just unlistenable. She sounded like a lunatic there is no logical thread in her ramblings, and her accent sounds like a parody of a nagging Jewish mother. I couldn't do more than a minute or two at a time, it was physically painful to listen to.

And, that is sort of the way it goes with Hairball America -about NOBODY listens to it. The ratings in every market I have seen put Hot Air America on the bottom.

There are a couple of good reasons for this - this "concept" was designed to influence voters first, and the "entertainment" part was kind of added on. A guaranteed recipe for failure in show business - things are entertaining to start with - you can't MAKE them entertaining, unless you're Steven Spielburg.

And Al Frankin et. al. ain't no Steven Spielberg.

Secondly - what on earth were they thinking with the target demographic? Un- and under-employed guys with ponytails, welfare recipients and and NOW hags? Boy, there's a group that advertisers are crawling over each other to reach. I can't figure out why they aren't making a lot of money.

The ship be sinking, all right. How low can it go in this case?

The sky's the limit.
