Retaliation Against Sunnis
Opinion Times ^ | 7/26/05 | Jim Pfaff

Instapundit opines on the increasing tension between Sunnis and Shi'ites in Iraq. The latter are growing increasingly frustrated with the former's support of Zarqawi led resistance, and some speculate that a brief civil war between the two might actually be good for the country. I can't see how that is an acceptable stop on the road to stability. But Sunni supported resistance is steadily leading to a point of retaliation by other factions. Glenn Reynolds says:

The Sunnis, I suspect, realize this, and old Ba'athist fantasies of omnipotence seem to be fading (Chemical Ali is said to be singing like a canary, along with several other Saddam cronies). If this is true, we'll see plenty of traditional brinksmanship but the Sunnis will always wind up making a deal, because the consequences of not making a deal will be too horrific. What's more, if they're smart, they'll recognize that holding out too long makes for a worse deal, as their position declines.

That's how it looks to me, anyway. Am I right? I don't know. I'm no Juan Cole or anything, but I could still be wrong.

Glenn, as is most often the case, you're right.

Give the Shia all the weapons they need. Let 'em loose on the insurgents. It won't take very long for the insugency to stop once Sunni Men are being killed by the thousands and thrown in mass graves. Not that this is the "correct" thing to do, but it sure would be effective.

Why </b>brief</b> civil war? A brief one would not solve any conflicts, but merely postpone them. What is needed for a stabilization would be a thorough-going civil war, with the complete destruction of tribal and religious social infrastructures, so that there'd be no sheik or cleric left in sight.

Your plan works for me...
But I wouldn't limit the ass kicking and blood letting to the Iraqi Sunni....
I would include the Syrian, Pakistani and Saudi Arabian Sunni.....
They are the whore's womb of the terrorism that attacked us and continue to stir the hate pot....

I see the media is still calling for a civil war.

And still grossly exaggerating the situation in Iraq.

{sigh!}
