FEMALE SERGEANT WINS SILVER STAR
Terrorists Humiliated By Woman Warrior From Hell
A female military police soldier was awarded a Silver Star Thursday in Iraq for helping to fight off insurgent forces that ambushed her convoy in March.
Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester of the 617th Military Police Company, a National Guard unit out of Richmond, Ky., is the first woman since World War II to receive the prestigious award for bravery under fire, according to a Defense Department press release.
Hester, 23, received the award along with two other soldiers from her unit, Staff Sgt. Timothy Nein and Spc. Jason Mike for their actions during the March 20 ambush.
Hesters squad was shadowing a supply convoy south of Baghdad when insurgents opened fire on the 29-vehicle convoy.
The squad of nine MP soldiers riding in three Humvees moved in to flanking positions and counter-attacked the insurgent position.
I got out of the truck with Nein and leaned up against a berm. I know I hit one of the RPK gunners and an insurgent that was down in the trench, the MP told an Army Times reporter on March 21 in Baghdad. As soon as we came on the scene their fire direction changed. [The insurgents] realized who they needed to fire on.
Hester attacked a trench position with 40mm grenades from the M203 grenade launcher on her M4. She then helped clear two trenches, where she killed three insurgents with her M4, according to therelease.
When the firing ceased, 27 insurgents were dead, six were wounded and one was captured, the release said.
Three of Hesters fellow soldiers were wounded in the ambush.
Hester knew she wanted to be an MP when she joined the Army, but never thought shed see true combat in that MOS.
When I first became an MP, going to Iraq period wasnt even realistic. I didnt realize Id be this involved in the fight here, she said in the March 21 interview.

God Bless her!!
You go girl!
God Bless this lady!
Nice work! Another American Hero.
Did her Silver Star come with a "V" device like Comrade Kerrys?
"When the firing ceased, 27 insurgents were dead, six were wounded and one was captured, the release said."
Our team is awesome.
Might silence the "women in combat" critics. You serve, you serve! IMHO

My daughter was awarded a Bronze Star for actions in much the same circumstances. Her MP unit was escorting a convoy when a fuel truck was hit by a roadside bomb. One of the MP Hummers was engulfed by burning fuel. She and several other soldiers braved enemy fire to rescue the men from their burning vehicle. She suffered burns to her face and hands.
Not long after she lost an eye, hearing in her left ear and suffered nerve damage to her left arm in a grenade attack.
I celebrate the courage and fortitude of our women in uniform like Sergeant Hester and her comrades.
Great story!!!!
Thank your daughter for her service to our country for me, please.
Thank you for raising such a wonderful daughter and thank her for everything she has done for this country.
Good for her...I like the take no prisoners....attitude, this is must my opinion........
"Hollywood would never run out of good stories about Iraq. Unfortunately they would have to do it in a way to trash our soldiers and the war."
I have been meaning to post an vanity to ask all if anyone has heard anymore about the supposed hollywood film to be produced on Fallujah with what's his name playing the part of Lt General Mattis, the Marine Corps. ground commander under 1MEF.
Anyone hear anything"
