On any given day, you can go to the Google News website and type the words dependence on foreign oil and see the phrase mentioned in literally hundreds of newspaper and blog articles. Understandably, the issue has received greater coverage in recent months due to rising gas prices, but it doesn't take a news junkie to know that the phrase has been an underlying theme in news articles for decades.
Politically motivated geologists and various other academics have declared each year, for the last fifty years, that there is only a twenty year supply of oil remaining in the world. However, even as the demand for oil grows each year, the world's estimated oil reserves increase by an even greater margin.
Global warming alarmists have labored tirelessly to demonize gas guzzling, eco-unfriendly SUVs, and Hollywood elites like Rob Reiner and Larry David have used their entertainment platforms to endorse hybrid vehicles. But it doesn't stop there; conspiracy theorists have filled cyberspace with stories of sinister attempts by unspecified oil companies to bury technological developments that would make everything from short-life lightbulbs to the internal combustion engine obsolete. Public opinion has been swayed far enough that many see oil executives as robberbarons who will do anything to protect the status quo, regardless of the profit potential of new technologies..............
