Koch Says Let Terri Die Peacefully

"I have great compassion for the parents," said former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, "but the father said that he saw [Terri] say, the last time he visited her, that she wants to live, as though she's been reading the newspapers or watching television and is aware of what's taking place ... it's that bizarre."

Koch thinks that it's simply a matter of Terri Schiavo's wishes, as determined by the courts, that she didn't want to live as she is now, and that she should be allowed to die with some dignity.

He doesn't think the legal wranglings of the family have been the right thing to do, and certainly not the continued court filings. "There have been 20 applications before the court, and they've all been dismissed," Koch told Fox News' Neil Cavuto.

"There are three heroes here. The attorney, George Felos, has been extraordinary in his work on behalf of Michel Schiavo."

"Even when he goes off on tirades?" asked Cavuto.

"Those tirades are absolutely warranted," answered Hizzonor, "particularly against the House and the Senate."

He said he has no problem with the Congress seeking a remedy, and having the courts reject it, but he thinks it was cowardly of the Senate not to have had a recorded vote, so we could see who voted for and against.

"The Supreme Court has three times rejected this, the federal court has rejected it and the state courts have rejected it ... how long can this fiasco go on?" he wondered.

Furthermore, Koch told Cavuto that the Supreme Court ruled 10 years ago that feeding tubes can be removed, and that this is not a matter of life no longer being important to Americans, but just the reverse.

"I think life matters a lot, and you want to die with dignity." He concluded rhetorically, "If I'm in a vegetative state, and I told my family I want to die if I'm in that state, should the State take it away from me?"

I have seen in reading the different responses to this battle, many say something about God. Well, if is God's will for her to live then give her food and water. We don't starve our babies because they can not eat solids nor do we not give them something to drink when they are thirsty. This child, yes child because of her mental state, is hungry and thirsty but some of you are taking a stand that she should not be fed or given water. This week is the most holy week of the year, and when you meet our Maker and he asks if you gave Him food when He was hungry or gave Him water when He was thirsty, remember He said when we do it for the least of them we are doing for Him. I pray for His will but I know He has given me free will so that I can become His child freely. Remember this when you freely state your opinions, because one day you will also have to answer for them.

Ed: I like you and respect you but killing someone on here say evidence is not acceptable to the majority of American's.

Koch wanted to let NYC die without intervention, too. Thank God for Rudy Guliani

and even if it was, it's still unconstitutional.

She may well not be in a vegetative state, but those who are trying to kill her don't care.

Ed's thinking is so bizarre that he doesn't realize

Funny isn't it. The liberals ignore the evidence that this woman wants to live, but also ignore the fact that murderer's convicted of their crimes deserve to die.

I wholeheartedly agree! Let her die peacefully of natural causes not be starved to death, regardless of how "euphroric" starvation may seem to some.

I don't recall the House, the Senate, or the President weighing in on this. So Koch believes that the right to kill someone can be "ruled on" by the judges, with no input from those of us to whom it might be done?

The Cruzan decision is a model for judicial tyranny. And it's not about the "right to die", it's about the "right to kill". The woman wasn't dying. Period. She wasn't "terminal", unless you consider not eating a terminal illness, in which case all of us are afflicted.

Ed Koch, Moron.

Everyone is weighing in. That's why I keep saying this is no longer about Mrs. Schiavo...it's about that 15 minutes of fame. I guess Mr. Koch hasn't been in the limelight lately, so it was time to dust him off and let him say something. Now he can go back to obscurity.

as though she's been reading the newspapers

There's no fool like an old fool. My four year old just started reading the newspapers. Should he have been terminated at three?

Kotch, go gracefully into political oblivion without adding your addle-headed ranting to the mix!!

" that she should be allowed to die with some dignity. "

Dignity would be allowing Terri to eat and drink- something that Judge Greer at Schiavo's urging, has forbidden- for years.
I wonder if Ed Koch understands that.
Christopher Reeves is lucky that Judge Greer didn't have a hand in his life after his accident.
Because like Terri, he needed help to feed himself.
Did Koch call for the Reeves family to starve Christopher ?
After all, who would want to " live like that ?"

If they must persist in convincing us that she is not in pain and is dying in dignity, why keep selling it?

If you haven't already read M Reagan's perspective about his father, link to it, it's interesting.
