Question for my Fellow Freepers...
March 23, 2005 | Hildy

Posted on 03/23/2005 5:09:24 PM PST by Hildy

You are in your 20's, and you're visiting somebody in the hospital. You pass by a room where somebody is all contorted up, in a vegitative state. Would you say to your husband:

a)Honey, Don't ever let me live in that condition.

b )Honey, If I ever get like that, please make sure you do everything in your power, whatever the cost to you and our family, financially and emotionally, to keep me in that vegitative state no matter how long it takes. I want you to come and sit by my side every day and go home alone every night. I want to have strangers tend to my most personal needs. If I don't respond in four or five years, make sure I'm kept alive by a feeding tube in my stomach. And, most importantly, if you're not sure if I know what's going on around me, please err on the side of caution and keep me in that bed, indefinitely.

Remember, you're 24 years old. Which one would you pick?

Yes! Mine too!! I remember you talking about it at Libs house and laughing when I heard it.

THAT'S WHY I ASKED THE QUESTION. Because it's not writing. Just speculation about what a normal 24 year old would say about the situation, that's all.

Yes, you did. You used the statement "If that's an honest answer," indicating that you didn't trust me to be truthful. The reason being that you cannot fathom that someone of my age may actually disagree with you.

I await your flames.

The problem I have with that is how many have been incarcerated for years, witnesses testifying to their guilt, lawyers making great cases, juries convicting on evidence, courts deny appeals, etc. and later DNA testing proves them innocent.
Everyone makes mistakes, in good faith, including lawyers and courts.

Still no merits to argue I see. As I thought.

My point is if most people knew what it meant and meant down the line after time, they wouldn't possibly say "keep me alive."

Given all the caveats you pose, any logical person would say "kill me."

But we don't know that the conversation even came up - we only have Michael Schiavo's word seven years after the fact.

It's fishy.

And given that we don't have definitive word, I'd say err on the side of caution.

That being said, if further examiniations by someone outside the situation show that she will not survive, then I'd say pull the plug. But if there is a realistic chance at survival, then why would we not take that chance?

I would have said, "Honey, if I'm ever like that I want you go right out and find somebody to shack up with and have a couple of kids. And get out of my life."

I think the polar bear would be more merciful and interesting than the dehydration option.

Stop trying to dance around what you clearly wrote. I apologize if you are unaccustomed to individuals who don't back off as soon as they encounter your bilious personality.

I don't want to be dehydrated to death, ever, and my husband knows that. It's a horribly inhumane thing to do to any living creature.

I would say so. Look if you want to argue for the right to kill her that is one thing.

But torture is just plain sick. I would not treat a dog like that.
