Richard Clarke came to speak on the Univ. of Ill. campus, and expressed an interest in winning the war by winning the war of ideas.
You can read the Daily Illini pre-coverage here and my news/blog article on the speech itself here.
Thoughts on Clarke? Does he have valid points to bring up? Or an alterior motive?
He was a decent speaker and it was a packed crowd the overflowed into another room where another packed audience watched the lecture on monitors. He took a few jabs here and there (Fox news and Bush's desire to recreate the blackboard of terrorists a la "Battle of Algiers").

He was proven to be a liar during the 911 hearings. What's to know?

I don't know man, it looks like the same ol crackpot clarke to me:
"We have to win this war as a war of ideas, and it doesn't involve killing innocent people."
"We've radicalized terrorists by attacking Iraq,"
"We're creating more terrorists." "
It doesn't give you any security to give up civil liberties," said Clarke in reference to the Patriot Act.

"Shock and Awe" would seem to be the only effective weapon. The Clarkes of the world give third world societies too much credit.
Right on. They give those brutes way too much credit. They're savages.

Dear Troll-if you're still watching this thread: From Dictionary.com
No entry found for alterior.
Did you mean ulterior?
ul·te·ri·or ( P ) Pronunciation Key (l-tîr-r) adj. Lying beyond what is evident, revealed, or avowed, especially being concealed intentionally so as to deceive: an ulterior motive. Lying beyond or outside the area of immediate interest. Occurring later; subsequent.

That reminds me of one of my favorite lines from "The Fountainhead".
When someone asked Howard Rourke what he thought of him, Howard replied, "I don't think about you!"
Which is how I feel about Clarke.

Explain to me, if you can, how the war in Iraq made the terrorists hit us on 9/11?

If anyone in government can be blamed for allowing 911 to
happen, it's this clown, and his boss, BJ Clinton.
They may as well invite Osama to speak on campus, IMHO.
