... the district filed a motion on Jan. 31 to dismiss the lawsuit. The district said in the motion that there's no factual evidence to back Williams' claim that his constitutional rights were violated. The motion also countered Williams' argument that he and his lesson plans were singled out for review by Principal Patricia Vidmar because of his religion. The motion stated that parental complaints prompted the actions.

WOW! You're just another Mom who is an engineer, and yet has time to come set us lowly Freepers straight. I'm honored.
Oh, forget this post. You've left us since you're an elitist "working stiff" who doesn't have time to hang people on the same peg, ain't that right?

Interesting that you're following this case and don't know what ADF is. Alliance Defense Fund, the lawyers' group with over $16 million budget who is backing Williams in this case, and to whose coffers I used to send my money.

Nope! I can actually spell. My friend has said she can't!Interesting. I never mentioned the spelling errors. So, are you saying you actually know the one who posted this thread? You just think it'd make it easier to throw us off the trail, but no dice.
I don't need a degree from some Tenured Turd to use my instincts.

This is not about the school banning the Constitution, it is about the school trying to keep the kids from learning about its historical founding in the religious beliefs of the people that crated it.
It seems "Parents" are playing a little fast and loose with the facts in this case by saying they never banned the Constitution. Technically, they did not ban the Constitution, just any meaningful discussion of how it was created. "Here is Constitution but don't say anything about how or why it was created."
Here is an article I found on the subject that explains it much better than the lame story linked in this thread.
Flashpoint: religious materials in class
(The "religious" materials are the writings of the founders it would seem)
...Stevens Creek has received hundreds of angry phone calls and more than 3,000 e-mails some vulgar, others threatening since Nov. 22, when one of its teachers, Stephen Williams, filed a federal lawsuit against the school. The fifth-grade teacher alleges his civil rights were violated when school principal Patricia Vidmar ordered him to stop distributing documents to his students "because of their religious content."
Among the banned documents, the suit says, were religious excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, various state constitutions and writings by George Washington, John Adams and William Penn.
Vidmar also banned a document Williams created called "What Great Leaders Have Said About The Bible." It quotes Jesus Christ and nine U.S. presidents. According to the handout, John Adams said, "The Bible is the best book in the world."
In his lawsuit, Williams, 39, said he merely wanted to use historical documents to explain the role of religion among the nation's founding fathers. But he said he was singled out because the principal knew he was a self-professed Christian....
. . . .
This most certainly is a case of the school trying to keep any reference to religion out of the school, as if to teach the kids by ommission that religious beliefs had nothing to do with the founding of our nation.
The parents and school seem confused over the difference between telling kids that people that crafted the constitution were religious and preaching religion to the kids.

My! What school did you teach at!?
I have a high schooler already and he has never been taught any of that! Let me be the first to say that I would oppose any of those teachings at the schools my kids go to.
They are taught a course in comparative religion (I believe in 7th grade or so, and I'm already upset that they devote a chapter to Islam (although there's something to be said for "know thy enemy") and only one chapter to all the other religions together. BUT, that is State curriculum and has nothing to do with Cupertino. If we want to change that, I propose we lead a delegation or start writing letters to the bureaucrats in Sacramento who made that choice.
I can also assure you, as I have been a volunteer at school every year, that we do teach the founding documents and their religious roots as well. We have two teachers in fifth grade who are protestant and one who's catholic. They have been teaching the same curriculum as Williams and have used supplemental materials as well and were never accused of proselytizing. If he had had one complaint, we could chuck it up to intolerance on the part of the parent. But 13 complaints in half a year and over 25 letters during summer requesting out of his class for this school year speak volumes about how far he went.
I commend you for being a teacher. I request you think a bit deeper about this case an try to do more fact finding or simply wait for the case to be addressed by the court before you make up your mind that the teacher is right in this case. I respect your opinion. I request you do the same.

Yessir, all the classic signs of elitist hippie trash. It has a Doctorate, don'tcha know, and has a job, but also has the time to come here and say "looka me - I are sumbuddy!" And it has friends, too. What a small world indeed, for to it run up on its bridge partner/A.N.S.W.E.R. monkey Bush hating blogger neighbor here.
Though it won't denounce a thing of that hippie site (that promotes raw sewage like Kos) it reminds us all we're incompetent when it comes to intellectual discourse.
Oh yeah, that site doesn't belong to it, let's not forget that.

Apparently you can't read. Did I not say I am a Christian who goes to church every Sunday? DO you? And what values do they teach you there?
To: another mom
Would you feel safe sending YOUR kids to school when you know some wacko who believed the ADF line could be coming to kill people there?Safer than I would feel using that much hyperbole. That stuff can kill your already-limited credibility...

Miss Mom,
You still have not answered the question 'if what you say is correct, why was the teacher disciplined'?
I did view your web site .. so much info on left wing issues .. a Christian (?) mom and you do not understand the issue of 'separation of church and state' pleeze....
But that's another post ... just answer the question if what you say is correct why is the teacher being disciplined?
