I've always enjoyed the Albert Finney version of A Christmas Carol.

It showed that Scrooge did have a sense of humor, even if it grew increasingly sardonic, tinged with bitterness and cynicism, as the years progressed.

I thought that the musical did a pretty good job of bringing Dickens' tale to life, which was a feat that most of the other adaptations have failed to achieve.

I suffer from panic disorder, so I feel qualified to post this one! Over the river and through the woods,
to Grandmother's house they go.....
I'll stay right at home and sit by the phone,
and hope that my fear doesn't grow...OH!
Okay, pretty lame....but I can take it!!
Hit me, baby!!!

I told you someone would protest! LOL.

I'm with you. Privacy and discretion are EARNED; by most people, they are earned very easily, with common courtesy.

Humorous.

I didn't think it was humorous.

Schizophrenia is a very, very terrible disease. Depending on the severity of the condition, people with schizophrenia are either completely out of their rational senses or living in a state of sometime in and sometimes out of rationality. And even when feeling somewhat normal, there is a constant and great anxiety over when the next panic attack will come.

They don't go out even when they are feeling ok because of fear that a panic attack come on while they are outside. To overcome this, to go out, they will load up on medicine to help them through. But this leaves them in a doped up state.

Certainly they are not able to work of hold gainful employment. Unless well off, social security payments become their sole source of income. That's anywhere from $980 to $1,800 a month.

The most effective medicines - and there really are none that cure this disease - are very expensive, costing upwards of $1,000 a month. If they are lucky, they will be able to get coupons from a doctor or some sort of a discount on the medicine. But even with coupons or discounts, the cost is $500 a month or more.

Not being able to afford this, they settle for less effective medicines and much less able to function, fighting off more frequently the anxiety attacks.

No, I do not think it is humorous. Really, it is quite sad. And quite sad that someone would make fun of this condition. I don't think the author meant any harm by their comments. It is just ignorance on their part.

And really, since when is FR about ignorance?

I like "A Christmas Carol" and I've seen several versions of it. But like I said before, I don't remember who produces what films. LOL!

But but but some people WANT to be offended.

It's not about being offended, it's about the double standard (at least for me)..

I've seen this same list every year for the past couple of years, and admittedly it's funny.

But consider this:

Would anybody on this thread dare to make a similar list about illnesses like diabetes, cancer, or losing a limb?

of course not. It would be disrespectful and in bad taste.

But how come it's okay to poke fun at the mentally ill?

I'm a supporter of NAMI -- the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (http://www.nami.org) we're just trying to create parity between mentally ill people and physically ill people. Jokes like this, while, again, hilarious (and frightfully true in some cases) undermines our ability to be taken seriously. It classifies us as something that somehow is okay to be ridiculed.

There's a lot of things in this world that are funny. Mental illness is not one of them.

Thank you very much! Thank you very much!
That’s the nicest thing that anyone’s ever done for me!
It isn’t every day
Good fortune comes me way
I never thought the future would be fun for me
And if I had a bugle I would blow it
To add a sort of how’s-your-father touch
But since I left me bugle at home
I simply have to say
Thank you very very very much!
Thank you very very very much!

Thank you very much! Thank you very much!
That’s the nicest thing that anyone’s ever
done for me!
The future looks so right
In fact, it looks so bright
I feel as if they’re polishing the sun for me
And if I had a drum I’d have to bang it
To add a sort of rum-tee-tum-tee touch
But since I left me drummer at home
I simply have to say

Thank you very very very much
Thank you very very very much!

That scene-aside from the actual denouement of Scrooge's dream-is probably the best part of the entire musical.

Another great part of the movie-aside from the amazing song and dance numbers-is the inclusion of scenes with the "The Ghost of Christmas Present", which are excised from other film adaptations.

*shrug* I have diabetes and depression. I'm starting to notice that my mind is getting fluky - CRS, Can't Remember Sh!t. My mind is slipping, I can feel it slipping.

And now you want to take away my ability to laugh at my own foibles?

Nope, I ain't playing my life by your rules. It would kill me.

Bless you for sharing, null and void. We that can laugh at our own shortcomings are way ahead of the game. Those who will not admit that they have any are the ones we need to worry about.
Laughter is great medicine!

Lighten up. Conservatives can joke about things. PC is out of control like you cannot say Merry Christmas for fear of offense.

Read the Constitution, you do not have a right not to be offended. I do not intentionally go out of my way to offend people.

If you lack a sense of humor you may also lack sense altogether.

And these are mental conditions, no where do I point to a single person whom I am trying to offend. It is like a blond joke or a fat guy joke. There are blonds and fat guys, but if it is not directed at you then it is just a joke.

To silence thought, is to silence freedom. I refuse to be silent. I refuse to be PC.

Besides maybe if someone said "Hey John Candy you need to lose weight." Hey John Belushi, "Lose some weight and quit doing drugs." Truth may hurt but it can also save lives.

Shallow, infantile, and...well, just not intelligent.

Oh, lighten up.
Mental illness is highly prized in my family, and something I require of my friends.
