Fitz, I appreciate your attempts to defend our soldiers, but in war situations at POW camps, there is a long history of occurrences like this, mainly because of poor oversight on the part of MI (military intelligence) and lack of troop rotation.
In military psychological studies, it has been show to be inevitable, because as a soldier and a human being, the mind starts to dehumanize the enemy. Unfortunately, some of these prisoners, just as in Guantanamo, were simple people, not soldiers or terrorists.
There is a new article in The Guardian with an article about a contractor from the prison who has come forward verifying that there IS a systemic problem with the way that prison is run.

OTOH, some of the responses on this thread are helping me to begin to see how the Nazis were able to get away with some of the things they did. There are folks actually trying to excuse these actions -- or at least rationalize them away.

Here's something to think about...

This is going to an overreaching and over simplification of a deeper subject, but time and space dictate that I'm brief...

The Arab culture is a shame based culture. If you do any study in the psychology of the Arab culture, you will see how much shame and humiliation control their actions. They are still humiliated over the fact that it took the British to get rid of Napolean in Egypt... still shamed over the fact they lost Spain. They are still humiliated that an army of Holocaust survivors beat them in a war and continues to beat them every time they fight. They react from being humiliated. They strike out to remove their shame.

Don't mistunderestimate this!

That's why it was so bad... That's why it was torture. Torture doesn't just have to be lopping off body parts.

Again...there is a big difference. Pledges are willing participants in their hazing with the ability to simply walk away if its too much. They aren't humiliated (per se) because everyone is in on the gag...

These prisoners, under our care, were not willing participants. Neither can they walk away.
