I know this is an old story but no one had posted it on FR. I hope it is still relevant to shed some light on a major Salon smear campaign. The picture below is from the article.

Be sure to zoom in on the picture so you can see all the funny stuff...like the rectangular "auras" around the helicopters and the Red sash that is in front of the podium plus the wacky shadows and lighting. I'm thinking if this picture were Black & White, it might even qualify for the Weekly World News!

Looks like Salon is trying to smear the Prez again, this time trying to blame him for a forest fire...

LOL! That's a formation of OH-58A scout aircraft (Bell 205) - No longer in the Army inventory, but widely available and in service with many agencies and civilian operators. You can fit one inside a Chinook.

Now the loggers are "after our old-growth again," Malone said. "It's hard not to be skeptical of a forest plan that bypasses environmental review. Why do we have to cut these trees down so fast, without even considering the facts? Didn't we just rush into the Iraq war like that?" Well, I see this guy made the rounds of the Sisters whackjob community. Had he bothered to find some old-timers (like, who lived there 20 years ago, when the population was static at about 450 people), he'd have gotten a different story. The 600 new people tend to be higly granola-esque.

Malone's an ass. That area had been steadily logged for decades, prior to the 1976 forest plan. He probably enjoys riding his bike on all of the old logging roads that criss-cross the woods in that area -- they're literally everywhere. And he probably really enjoys riding along the old Brooks-Scanlon rail bed that was used to move logs out of the forest over to the mills in places like Detroit....
He's also probably one of the people who lobbied against the removal of the large stands of beetle-killed trees that made the B&B fire so hard to put out.....

Portland's daily newspaper, the Oregonian, and Oregon Public Broadcasting have given serious coverage to the argument that Bush allies may have set the fire. Why would they cover that? It's leftist wacko hooey. Oh, never mind.

"They were Chinook military helicopters -- huge things with round noses. There were three of them, and they were moving in tight formation, lollygagging over the woods, zigzagging near [the town of] Sisters and out toward Black Butte," some 25 miles to the northwest. ![](http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/images/ch-47-DD-SD-99-03855.jpg)

Malone noted that many Sisters residents still remember Layton and Bartlett, a Bend logging firm whose principals were, in 1990, found guilty of illegally cutting 1,800 trees -- federally protected old-growth -- about 10 miles south of Sisters. James W. Layton and Frederick W. Bartlett each drew 18 months in federal prison. Remind me, who was President in 1990?

Is this story a spoof? There's odd stuff in it, e.g., the following:
"Chuck," Berry said, "I hope what I see out there is a cloud."
"This is way out in the middle of Bumfuck, Egypt."
Chuck Berry? Bumfuck? This has got to be a joke.

When Schwarzenegger becomes Governor of Kolly-vornia, expect more of these things.
Expect left-wing militia groups to form.
Expect Howard Dean to talk about black helicopters, the Bildebergers, the secret conspiracy of the Federal Reserve, and the Protocols of Zion.
Expect Hillary Clinton to start broadcasting on shortwave radio as "Hillary of Chappaqua."
Expect Ted Kennedy to write Behold a Pale Pony, about how the Jason Society, the CFR, and the Trilateral Commission are all in a secret conspiracy with the aliens from Dulce, New Mexico and Area 51.
Expect ME to be the guy with a bag of popcorn and a manure-eatin' grin (c8

Are you sure that this wasn't meant as a comedic short story?
There has got to be something in the water up there, or is there so much pot smoking going on that even people 2-3 miles away are getting a contact high!!!
This deserves the "Drooling Idiot" award...
or at least a boot to the head.
