Florida Republican Randy Fine has been heavily criticized for an errant social media post that appeared to express his preference for dogs over Muslims.
Pundits from both sides of the aisle - from Jake Tapper to Megyn Kelly - rushed to denounce the Sunday X post as Islamophobic.
'If they force us to choose, the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one,' Fine initially wrote.
The comment was slammed as 'disgusting bigotry' by CNN's Tapper, while Huffington Post contributor Yashar Ali described Fine as 'one of the most horrible people in public office'
Fine, 51, responded to the condemnation by attempting to offer what he framed as 'context'.
However, his follow-up only revealed he had misconstrued a sarcastic post from Manhattan nonprofit leader Nerdeen Kiswani as serious.
Kiswani's post, published to X Thursday, had poked fun at New Yorkers' growing and well-known disdain toward dog owners who leave behind their pets' droppings.
'Finally, NYC is coming to Islam. Dogs definitely have a place in society, just not as indoor pets. Like we’ve said all along, they are unclean,' she jokingly wrote, paving the way for Rep. Fine's seemingly serious response.
Mike Nellis, a former Kamala Harris aide who is now a political commentator, added that he thought the Israel-supporting politician 'a garbage human being'.
Cenk Uygur, who was born a Muslim but is now an atheist, went on to ask his followers how Fine's remarks would be received if the word 'Muslims' was replaced with the word 'Jews.'
'Now watch what happens to Randy Fine after saying it about Muslims. Absolutely nothing. Bigotry doesn't matter, only antisemitism,' the Young Turks founder wrote.
Liberal activist and content creator Ed Krassenstein also took issue with the post, which also earned the ire of several conservatives.

Depends on which dog and which Muslim.
No one would pick a muslim over a dog.
Which would you rather hump your daughter’s leg?
I agree with him.
Also, it’s not a bigoted statement anymore than democrats saying “I don’t worship sky daddy”
Come meet my Rhett, and the answer will be clear to you
“No one would pick a muslim over a dog.”
Depends on what you’re picking them for.
medical experiment?
target practice?
landmine detection?
crash test dummy?
Liars. He didn’t say that at all.
What breed is Rhett? That name makes me think of either a Rotweiler a Boxer or a long eared Hunting Dog.
True. One you shoot over, the other you shoot at.
Keep in mind, I’m not casting a dark view over every Muslim.
No. We are all children of God. I give each man or woman the benefit of a doubt until I know to expect otherwise from that individual.
But at the same time, I have studied the origins of that faith, therefore, I am civil, but ever watchful.
Simmer down folks. He meant Jews.
I’ve had the privilege of dropping multiple explosive devices onto ISIS positions in Syria since that day in 2015.
I fail to see the problem with his comment.
Applause. Loud applause. Islam, which fights that all should submit to it, should be fought at every turn.
Dogs that go oink oink.
Never, ever.
Well, I’d certainly feel safer sleeping with a dog in the house. I’d also feel safer on a plane with a dog, or at a concert with a bunch of dogs, or walking down the street in front of a dog…
