The US and Canada are meant to be the best of friends, but they’re in the midst of a pretty ugly fight.
It began with President Donald Trump’s ascent to the White House, when he began referring to his outgoing Canadian counterpart as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.”
Things escalated from there, with heated meetings and calls leading to the US enacting (then retracting, then enacting, then retracting) tariffs on its northern neighbor, and Canada responding in kind.
Province leaders got in on the action as well, perhaps most notably Ontario Premier Doug Ford: “If they want to try to annihilate Ontario,” he said early on in the tariff saber-rattling, “I will do everything — including cut off their energy with a smile on my face.” This week, he took steps to make good on that threat, announcing a 25 percent tax on electricity exports to New York, Minnesota, and Michigan. The US responded by promising to increase tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50 percent. That led to both sides reversing course, and a fresh round of ongoing talks. (Though Trump maintained on Thursday that “Canada only works as a state.”)
I wanted a firsthand account of how all this is affecting normal Canadians and Canadian politics. So I dialed up Vox’s Zack Beauchamp, who lives in Canada, to get the scoop.
Zack told me that “Canadians are angry — just out-of-this-world angry about what the United States is doing to them.”

Bye bye Canada.
Just drop the unfair Tariffs Canadiens and then drop the faux outrage!
We want good relations with Canada.
This requires fair and open trade, and Canada providing for it’s own defense.
Canada cannot use the USA as it’s piggy bank to fund it’s socialist utopia.
They may want to simmer on that outrage a bit.
I like Canada— I give them a lot of slack because I grew up loving the Band RUSH and I really like the comedian Martin Short. That being said, yeah, we need fair trade, and with that, then we can talk. They aren’t bad people, just have a lousy government like us.
Two words:
Reciprocal Tariffs
Anger, a step toward acceptance.
I honestly dont care what the parasite sucking off America thinks.
During the Cold War, they paid for their share of Defense by participating in "peacekeeping" missions. Best example of that was the Korean War.
Now that they're refusing to pay for their Defense, we should charge them a tribute. We're protecting them so it's still a good deal.
Canada, guess which finger this is?
But now we wont have their blanket of military security :)
Many many of the people are not. That bunch of WEF fools are mad of course. But who cares?
But you have to understand that when you do that other countries will do the same.
Ford has threatened everything,
including bringing nukes in ... against the USA,
that has protected it for decades.
Canada may just get what it deserves for electing him,
and the other Nazis and pedophiles.
I like Canada also...I like bear hunting and fishing up there...
It’s VOX !
Why are we listening to Vox?
On the flip side of this article...
I know Canadians who are chomping at the bit to be a state and actually live under a bill of rights and have free travel and the benefits of the stronger US currency and combined economy.
Only the French provinces and government are rabidly fighting us. The rest are mostly with us. Just watch and keep plenty of popcorn handy. My prediction is this is going to get a lot more interesting very soon.
Yeah, children who got their allowance cut off have the same reaction.
Haven’t seen it. I did like Corner Gas.
Ask me if I shive a git.
They’re spoiled rotten from taking advantage of us on trade.
