On a recent flight, I found myself seated next to a man I’ll call Rick, who was keen for conversation.
We established that we are both lawyers. Rick works for the government, and I explained that I lead a gun violence prevention organization. Rick took that as an invitation to talk about guns.
A self-described “2A fanatic” from Texas, Rick grew up with guns and today owns more than 40 firearms. He considers himself a collector, and many of his guns are antiques — he’s not interested in assault-style firearms — and he makes his own ammunition from recycled casings. In short, Rick is a gun guy, and I was interested in his views on gun violence.
Rick offered that he has family in Uvalde, where 19 elementary school students and two educators were murdered in a mass shooting last year. He declared that... he felt that “something needs to be done.”
I asked Rick what he believed should be done. He wondered aloud about psychological testing for gun buyers but concluded that that would be too challenging to administer.
I asked what he thought about “red flag” laws that allow for temporary removal of firearms when a gun owner is determined to pose a risk for harming themself or others. Rick didn’t support these types of laws because he doesn’t trust the process.
Efforts to tackle military and veteran suicide by addressing access to firearms? No, he sees suicide as an individual decision.
What about limits on gun ownership for those with a history of domestic violence? Rick had mentioned that his legal work included handling sexual assault cases, so this seemed like low-hanging fruit. But again, Rick was not on board. He felt there were too many cases in which women falsely accused their partners of domestic abuse.

An anti gun attorney who can process rational thoughts.
It,...could happen.
How is suicide a factor in why people should be disarmed?
I’m sorry if somebody is hurting enough to off themselves, but how does it keep them safe by disarming me?
Most liberals somehow see death by gun as worse than death by other methods, including jumping in front of a vehicle.
Yet another holier than thou that wants you to understand that they have the right ideas and that you need to join them in their way of thinking...... Oh, and by the way, did she tell you that she’s a Lawyer enough?
YOU WON!
Absolutely no way this conversation took place.
Bonus Round... She’s from Chicago....How’s that working out for you?
Time alike this you want access to any and every database known, to research her travel history and find ‘Rick’. Completely unbeknownst to her.
Then confront on her lies in front of the world.
Why does the discussion never go to the real reason it is in the Constitution?
Columbo:
“Just one more thing. Help me understand why our Founding Fathers thought the 2nd amendment was so important. What does it exactly say again?”
They use suicide by gun in gun violence statistics. Not really fair. Given a choice in a suicidal person, a gun is likely an easy and effective option. If no gun....seems like there are plenty of other options.
Methods of Suicide: Suffocation (strangulation and hanging). Jumping from height. Drowning. Poisoning. Drug overdose. Carbon monoxide. Gas-oven. Shooting. Cutting and stabbing. Starvation and dehydration. Collision with or of a vehicle. Electrocution. Hypothermia.
• Using data from the 2017-2019 National Violent Death Reporting System, in all age groups, 55% of men and 30% of women used firearms; 28% of men and 29% of women hanging/suffocation; 9% of men and 32% of women poisoning, and 8% of men and 9% of women “other” methods (Front. Public Health. 2022;10 DOI:10.3389/fpubh.2022.955008). “The findings call for the following suicide prevention strategies: (1) restricted access to firearms; (2) improved access to mental health/substance use treatment; (3) improved long-term and palliative care services for those (mostly older adults) with physical health problems; (4) financial/housing support policies to mitigate economic hardship; and (5) more research to identify effective strategies to curtail the increasing use of firearm and hanging/suffocation among young and middle-aged adults.”
• There is data that shows access to guns increases the risk of suicide by gun. But a looking at World Health Organization data indicates that the United States falls more or less in the middle of the pack for both male and female suicides, with 17.7 male deaths (38th-most among 105 countries) and 4.5 female deaths (40th) per 100,000 people (the transnational statistics are drawn from varying years)(https://foreignpolicy.com/2013/05/03/how-does-americas-suicide-rate-compare-globally/#:~:text=But%20a%20look%20at%20World,are%20drawn%20from%20varying%20years).
Personal, human responsible agency.
Self-discpline and training.
But the “liberal” sure seems to “think” otherwise:
The yellow stripe down the center of the road, does not protect you from on-coming traffic.
The badge on a police officer’s uniform, does not protect you from the police officer.
Woke narratives, certainly do not protect you - and had no effect upon HAMAS.
bkmk
I remember reading a while back that Japan, where almost no guns are in private hands, has a much higher suicide rate than the US.
If someone wants to kill themselves, they’ll find a way.
Or driving in front of a truck to save your children from showers with Ol' Rumpleforeskin...
She’s getting close....culture, violence....Chicago’s “gun violence” can certainly be attributed to a cultural shift. But it’s not with facts that the yoots are armed.
Typical of a gun-grabber to expect a gun-owner to “change his views.”
Yes. Another fever-dream fantasy on-the-nose garbage article.
Ms. Vinik is disarmingly attractive.
